by MeraBharatMahan on Jun 10, 2012 10:59 PM

Not sure how this movie will be..only seen the promos...but yes....you need to have taste of these kind of semi-artitistic movies to understand these...they are not flat or Desi Type like Dabang,Rowdy Rathode which any illiterate person can enjoy and wistle in theater....Definitely this Guy does not make movie for all....But this Guys previous movies were great treat...atleast Oye Lucky Lucky Oye and Khosla Ka Ghosla...those were real good...

Yes OS - it indeed is about Kolkata slum. The use of a female CM says it all. What I would say five star is Abhay Deol's acting. He perfectly plays the Tamil babu.

If the plot and final conclusion is not understood the picture must be a good one.

Banerjee didn't compromise and made a brilliant subtle film
by arnab bhattacharya on Jun 10, 2012 01:51 PM  | Hide replies

Shanghai is brilliant film..It is subtle layered intelligent.. probably it is too subtle for regular Indian cine-goers but then seriously it is a worthy adaptation of "Z". The detailing were superb and so was the steady character build up.. It is not the regular film and even in the climax there is no over dramatization when the villain is revealed as Abhay Deol (IAS officer) plays politics himself with farooq sheik.. Sadly quality cinema doesn't work in Indian scenario kya kiya jaye :( And even if you make a good film there needs to be enough of spoonfeeding done...

Having seen "Z" i really feel DB has done justice to the story .. From shacky camera to angles everything were almost similar to "Z" telling from the perspective of the photographer..The tone, detailing were all superb..Rightly an IMDB user said "that if you dont watch or criticise Shagnhai then better dont complain why Indian cinema is not of world standard"..

Neither Brilliant nor subtle... Weak plot, irritatingly slow, no development of characters, using fancy dim lit ciematography & typical caricatures of IAS officers is not brilliant... Also taking the audience for granted with no narrative to explain the going ons, i think he's just been too smart for his own good.. this is called ridiculous film mamking...

I really hope that the industry provides more movies like these. I hope that with the growth of Indian intellectual class movies like these will find more acceptance in the industry. I like the first scene of the movie, where the prankstar beats up the fatStallowner in super-slow motion. Cant recall a movie which sets up the story with such a strange but fascinating camera-work.

If this is world class movie, then I would rather spit on it. Avatar is world class cinema, and so is American beauty...make it entertaining not bland gutter stuff like this

What an average film!
by ziddimiss on Jun 10, 2012 01:29 PM  | Hide replies

Such a dissapointment after so much hype and rave reviews. Boring. Average screenplay, average plot.. only performances dont make a film. Our reviewers and film makers should watch whats good contemporary world cinema. I am not a film professional and even i can tell the difference. As long as we promote such average cinema in the name of art, the Rowdy Rathode s would be hits.

this movie is a f_raud, a sorry pretender made by pseudo intellectuals with superficial understanding of the situation. Imagine making IAS officers as heroes in todays era of massive corruption.

Atleast movies like RR do not pretend, have their USP publicized outright.

What is cinema - it is a form of art where you depict our lives and imagination through a series of camera shots. It requires a certain intellectual inclination where you have to see what the artist has to say. Just like standing before a canvass to discover what he has to say.

According to me this movie is quite straightforward and makes absolutely no pretence. It is about the struggle of a few ordinary individuals like us who have to fight an inimical situation. Probably same as the situation you would face when you see your neighbor being beaten up by the police, and there is no justice. Have you ever seriously wondered why is there such a massiveMaoist rebellion in our country? Why do people feel so deprived on issues such as land acquisition that they lose faith in democracy? Is there a threat that democracy can destroy our country if we wantTo becomeSanghai through undemocratic means? Any form of media should raise questions to have any meaning.

The point is serious movies are for serious people. And this movie is not even serious - it portrayed a series of events entertainingly if not convincingly - where I found an attempt to tell the story of a series of tragic event and where many lives are tangled against a hopeless struggle for justice.

I will even watch RR if you do insist - but I have tried watching AkkyKumar and Dabaang and failed. It is just mindless fantasy and you have to be reallyDumb not to understand this.

Just because the subject is powerful does not mean the film is. There are much better films made on similar subjects by Indian film makers before. One is talking about this particular film. It is a very ordinary film per say. If you know anyone personally who goes through life changing expereinces in life, then you would know how shallow this film is. It is neither Rowdy Rathod( which is silly entertainment) nor A Separation( which is great world cinema). None of the characters in this film go through any journey. It fails leave any impact or move the audience. And the problem with this film is exactly what you yourself have said. This film is not even serious. It just gives you a series of events. I would watch news to see that. I am not trying to debate your taste. Coz i think any creative expression is also subjective. But I do think that our audience is growing and the fact that films like Pan Singh Tomar connected to a larger audience and Shanghai is failing to do so, says something abt the gut reaction of an averagely educated audience.
