Medical education
by Chinmaiee on Jun 24, 2012 08:45 AM

Medical education in India should be state funded and only private players with proven track record s should be allowed to enter into this field. The curriculum and the examination system should be strictly regulated.Recognition and accreditation syatem should be more frequent by a neutral authority preferably decided on case to case basis and not a permanent authority like the MCI or the AICTE or the UGC. The Govt should be very strict as far as Medical education is concerned.

Corruption
by Sudipta Paul on Jun 17, 2012 01:45 PM

The problem is a part of the corrupt society. I am glad that Amir Khan has highlighted it. The IMA and the Government should try to reduce these things in the healthcare system.

Could Amir Khan or anybody else answer the questions (and I would request Amir to highlight these issues at Satyameva Jayate):

1. How a person would pay 25% or 30% of the value of a flat in cash (black) where he wants to live? Does he pay it by black money or convert his hard-earned white money in to black?

2. Why somebody has to pay money (cash) to local dada when he buys/sells or construct a flat or house? Where that money comes from?

3. Where the money comes from to pay bribe (cash) for perfectly legal works to be done at government offices?

4. Whether it is cheating people when hype about a film is created on the media before its release so that the people involed in making the film could earn crores?

5. How the film stars (and superstars) get paid (in black and white)? He must know it in and out.

6. Is it not cheating by the insurance companies when they sell and insist on selling the life insurance endowment policies (where people would get money back), ULIP and and insurance-investment products rather than the only risk cover policy that is better and cheaper for the customer. But the agent would not highlight the risk cover policy ever and always mislead the customer to have the endowment policies even if the customer somehow comes to know about and asks for the former.

Back ground wisdom, for this statement
by K Vemu on Jun 13, 2012 07:43 PM

Well, Rajnikanth goes to Singapore for treatment. Danny Williams goes to US for treatment. Etc.,

And doctors go, why are they all going out of the country when we can do it for them.

And a sample of doctors proved they were not there yet! People go nuts. And actor goes, hey doctor thou shelt treat a kin before you touch a patient outside. Or malpractice insurance shall be brought to effect.

And USA (Aamir is not the first who said this) said we shall experiment this on all Doctors who enter the country as immigrants, who shall not take the patients for granted.

Unfortunately, we witnessed several cases. So, here we are. Well, I'm not a dcotor, but I read all the links which came to this conclusion. Maybe you should also know. So you are on guard.

Health Insurance brings this type of Malpractice laws into effect.

Doctors and corruption
by Sindu on Jun 13, 2012 11:27 AM

I would like to share one incident. A dr in my area (Bhayandar E) was new in our area & had put up a board MBBS,Mumbai. After a year, he got married & had been on leave & during that time his clinic was renovated & a new board was put up which read MBBS (London). How ridiculous but nobody noticed it (as nobody bothers to read the degree, coz they have blind trust in doctors)but as a kid I pointed this out to my mom. this was 15 years back. the doctor &his London board is still there.
This doc cannot keep confidentiality. Patients trust him & tell their problems, sickness, etc. once the patient leaves the dr's cabin & when the next patient enters, this dr shares the patient's secrets with others and laughs. one more incident, My neighbour aunty one day fainted wit stomach & upper shoulder pain. they took her to this doc & he said nothing much, and that she was suffering from acidity. later they went to one of the reputed hospitals in Bandra as the symptoms persisted and there it was diagnosed as Gallstone. Aunty was operated. This aunty's daughter went with the reports to this "so called London returned dr" and he got angry saying that for 30 rs medicine u come here and for spending thousands you go to Bandra and dont even ask me. let your mom come with any aliment i will not treat her and will see that she suffers. this gurl (10 years old) comes home crying and tells her dad. Her dad got angry and went and scolded the doc

Cut Practice highlighted by Amir Khan
by Dr Arun Bal on Jun 12, 2012 09:40 PM

Doctors constitute 25% of all healthcare stakeholders. Doctors have Code of Ethics which to certain extent enforceable. But other stake holders like hospitals, industry, drug companies have no code of ethics which is enforceable. It is true that cut practice is rampant but MCI or state medical councils can not control this practice. This is because Ethics committees of MCI or state councils have no investigation wing and they can ONLY act on complaints received with credible evidence. Only news paper reports, allegations are inadequate. In reality such complaints with justifiable evidence are usually non existent. Cut practice can only be controlled if there is some control on technology misuse. As of today we have no mechanism to control or decide which and what no of any new or existing technology is required for a particular set of population.Similarly pharma companies giving gifts to the doctors is covered under sec 6.8 of code of Ethics of MCI. Some doctors have been already punished under this section in last 2 years. However like in US or other western countries it is necessary to have also stiffer punishments for pharma companies.70% doctors in India are of indigenous disciplines. However there is no control over pharma companies promoting modern drugs to these doctors. This issue has been highlighted by many NCO`s and doctors for many years. However unless all stake holders are brought in to ambit of disciplinary action it is difficult to control

Snajay Nagral`s write up on Stayamev Jayate
by Dr Arun Bal on Jun 12, 2012 09:20 PM

IMA`s credibility is low. when MCI Ethics Committee issues show cause notice to its Office Bearer`s for accepting endorsement money ,IMA demonstrated before MCI. IMA activel protested when MCI suspended Dr Deasi`s registration.New MCI and its Ethics Committee is functioning acively. All pending complaints have been heard and disposed off. However MCI is an appellate body and it can usually only take up complaints if state councils don`t take action for 6 months. Many doctors get stay orders from courts. It is true that MCI needs to let people and doctors know what action is being taken. In Amir s show a case of toe gangrene was shown Presumably this patient has diabetes. His strory is a common to many patient. It is not doctors fault.India has 6.2 crore diabetes patients and 15% of these pts have foot ulcers/wounds. However only 3 to4 institutes in India give training in management of Diabetic Foot Problems. Medical Curriculum has not changed for decades while disease profile of India has changed drastically.Unless new emerging diseases are included such cases will keep on increasing. Highlighting them on TV may increase TRP but will not change groind realities. MCI code of Ethics already has provision about "Cut Practice" However MCI can ONLY take action if a complaint is received. MCI has no investigation wing and action can be taken against docctors ONLY with credible evidence . MCI can take action against doctors and NOT hospitals

Sanjay Nagral On Ssatyamev Jayate
by Dr Arun Bal on Jun 12, 2012 08:48 PM

Amir Khan`s show has made serious healthcare problems in India a TRP issue. Few Points about issues highlighted in the show. MCI was reconstituted in 2010 after Dr Ketan Desai was arrested. The new MCI`s ethics Committee by taking swift action in Oct 2010 suspended Dr Desai`s licence and thereby prevented him from taking over as President of World Medical Association. Amir Khan siad NO action against any doctor was taken by MCI for unethical behavior. This is in correct . Since 2010 August when the new ethics Committee started functioning many doctors registration have been cancelled for various periods of time. MCI act and Code of Ethics as well as guidelines of High Court and Supreme Court do not allow permanent cancellation of registration unless the act committed by the doctor is very grave. Therefore impression given by Amir khan that MCI has not taken any action is wrong. It is true that MCI has not widely publicized these punishments except to publish the fact its website. MCI Ethics Committee has drafted guidelines for sponsorship of conferences by way of amendment to sec 6.8 of code of Ethics. However these are to be approved by the Health Ministry and still pending. The amendment was done to make the relationship between sponsors and organizations holding conference more transparent . IMA`s stand on this issue is an example of extreme example of double standards. IMA accepted very large sum of money from an MNC to endorse its products.
