A great son of India passes away...

but his message - 'noitikatar skhalon dekheo, manobotar poton dekheo ganga tumi boichi keno' (Oh Ganges, why do you continue to flow even as you witness the downfall of our moral and human values) lives on. May his soul find peace!

Please correct

Please correct this line: "Guwahati University authorities have donated a 30-year-old teak tree.."

It was a Sandalwood Tree, not Teak.

Sudhakanta Bhupenda is still alive in the mind and soul of the Assamese people. It is very first time that more than 16 lakh people come to pay homage together. Not at working hour, at night, midnight.

Now Brahamaputra and Bhupenda are flowing together through the hearts of millions, we can expect a better society with ethical (naitikata) and human (manabata) values.
Godspeed Bhupenda's dream of a better society.

Sure!!! Instead of watching murderers & criminals walking away with it, we Indians would be the utmost happiest if deserving souls like Bhupenda get it.

I still recall listening to Bhupen Hazarika rendering "Ganga Boichho Keno" with the Calcutta (as it was then) Youth Choir on the gramaphone. I was just a teenager then, and listening to him had left be breathless in wonder. I was listening to his songs on the CD last night. I was again left breathles in wonder.

Bhupen Hazarika cremated, fans pay respects

The GU authorities donated a 30 year old SANDAL wood tree and not a teak tree. His mortal remains has been consigned to the flames but his voice and memories will always remain amongst us forever. What preceded in the last two days is beyond words. It has to be seen to be believed. Sadly our national broadcaster DD failed to take any initiative to broadcast this never ever to occur again mega event nationally. We Assamese may be poor as far as wealth is concern but we have shown to the world how rich we are in honouring our legend DR BHUPEN HAZARIKA the greatest mucisian of the world. He does not requrire a Bharat Ratna posthumously to be conferred on him to make him great. To us he is the greatest musician of the world. We will not bid you farewell Bhupenda because you are and will always be amongst us and with us.

Will like to recall a small encounter I had with the great legend some 10 years back. I was then flying for Air India (erstwhile Indian Airlines) and my scheduled route was Delhi – Guwahati. To my pleasant surprise on that day Bhupen Da was flying on the same flight to Guwahati. We were cleared for take off by the ATC Delhi and assured of a pleasant weather. However after we crossed into Kisanganj we were hit by a rumbling storm and heavy turbulence, rendering it practically impossible to maintain steady altitude and radio contact with ATC Kisanganj. Upon the weather not showing any signs of improvement and the static radio failing us we had to take a decision to either retract to Delhi or to continue further, take a detour and come down to Kolkata, (Bagdogra not feasible due to heavy down showers.) In those 5-7 minutes of incessant bad weather and indecision we had dropped and gained altitude for a couple of times causing a lot of humdrum and commotion among the passengers. The cabin crew was failing to pacify the masses. Upon instructions from my Captain I stepped out of the cockpit and assured the passengers of their safety and well being. I also got a chance to speak and reassure Bhupen Da about the situation. As a person of exceptional character and grit Bhupen Da simply smiled and assured me that everything will be fine and that a lot of things had to be completed before he could think of dying. His supreme sanguinity actually alleviated the people’s mood a
