I read the Ghote story where there's a murder in a Bollywood studio. At that point, he had visited Bombay once. The story has a lot of atmosphere, you can feel the heat and the dust, but the plot is very weak.

Three characteristics mark Keating's Ghote stories:Bad English, convoluted plots and tame endings.Keating's original detective was Inspector Ghosh, married to Protima and father of Ved.When it was pointed that Ghosh should be in Calcutta and not Bombay,Ghosh became Ghote,Protima remained Protima.Ghote novels were written in what Keating imagined to be the English spoken in Mumbai. It is an irritating lingo, not the language spoken by the people of Mumbai. In his last novel "Bribery and corruption too" set in Calcutta (to where a retired Ghote moves with Protima)the characters are all Bengali and speak impeccable but longwinded English. "Perfect murder" owes its success to Ismail Merchant and Nassiruddin Shah, not to Keating.
