ARR is overhyped. Take his 3 most recent Tamil albums - VTV, Ravanan, Enthiran. Of them, the only one worth a listen is 'Hosanna' fom VTV. The rest are easily forgettable and sometimes listening to them gives you a headache.
During 90's and early 2000's Rahman produced some good numbers mostly Tamil. But not lately.
Being called 'Mozart of Madras' is an insult to the medieval Austrian genius. The great man did not copy music from anywhere nor did he use digital systems to create artificial effects. If there's a musical great in Chennai, that is the one and only Illayiaraja.

Ilayaraja is a genius and he does not deserve oscar or grammy to acknowledge him.People who are so naive can talk ill about Ilayaraja. Some one has said he did not encourage new singers. He encouraged singers who were and are still good.ARR encouraged singers who can only be "were good" and some are good.SO better not to compare.Ilayaraja spoiled the lyrics ? What about songs from Endhiran ? No one can even tell what is the language in which it is sung ?If Jai Ho can win oscars, each and every movie of Mohan for which Ilayaraja composed should win oscar.ARR's composition in Raavanan,Endhiran is not up to the mark.Just not even 1/2 of Raja's compositions and he has gone repetitive. So all Ilayaraja bashers should first learn what is quality music all about.Listen to Nandhalala BGM and everyone can tell it is above oscar awards for sure.

Buddy,This is not a historical search that we are doing.Ilayaraja is a genius whether you like it or not.Rest of them are great and Ilayaraja is the greatest.

Illayaraaja music was so good so that he drove out the Hindi cine music from Tamil nadu. Even though he was an extremely good composer, he single handedly detroyed the song writers with his "mama ", " akka petha" style lyrics.(Ask Vairamuthu). He encouraged only a handful of singers. His downfall started from Enga ooru pattukkaran period when they started calling him Gnani.
ARR has succcesfully driven out (almost) the english( western ) songs, and making entry into west. Why are u jelous? The next Gen will make westerners work for Tamil Cinema. This is going to happen

you are freaking wrong man. Mozart was inspired by various people in his career. I mean inspired in its true sense, not copying like b-movies.
This song upped the mood in the movie and sounds really great outside tooo .....
People crying on rehman here are only the jealous loosers who can't just take a fellow indian go great ....
Recognition may not be for his best work .... Likewise he got oscar for slumdog cos that was the best work last year .... Again this also its the same ...but rehman has bettered himself here :) ...i really hope and pray rahman get the award...
I've started feeling that this Oscar business is shady and is motivated not by merit, but by some ulterior motive. Rehman may get the Oscar, just on these grounds. Just remember how he buggered up the Asiad song. According to me, it was obnoxious.
What Rahman makes is not music but sound. He is a copy master of the first order who tries his best to make some of the sort of his own music by copying the tit bits from the wesetern musicians. Some are born great, some are made great & on some greatness is just thrust upon-Rahman belongs to the third category. Music is some thing dearer & appealing to the ears;Rahman's "so called music" abjectly lacks this basic quality. He does not deserve any award-not to speak of the Oscar Award!
he is an over-rated and hyped up fellow..does not receive a street award as his music has no substance...but in todays world..hype works.. look at how youung Rahulji is being hyped by media as a future prime minister!!!

why are you so pisssed off? Every Indian has a narrow regionalism genes somewhere hidden. That's why our country is just down and out. your message is a great example of people losing their heads i,e thinking power. You have lost it and so you have written some trash. most of your Tamil noble laureate friends have kicked this nation's backside and got recognition as a citizen of other countries. In contrast, some Bengalees have also won that award (also contributed to the independence of this country immensely) but you wont hear any bengali shouting from their rooftops. Also, north - south doesnt matter when you are discussing about someones achievements. You can be better than this. Pl try to be an honest, decent citizen of this nation and by the way, please dont vote people like Raja to screw this nation.

Ashish,It is good to see nowadays that people are speaking out frankly.Sadly, these days hype and marketing works majorly.Anyway, genius like Ilayaraja,MSV,RD.Burman,Naushad and so on will forever remain in hearts of millions of people through their music and will remain as evergreen music legends. They do not need any Grammy or Oscar to prove their genius. They are beyond such awards.
i hope rahman get the award... it was really great to hear the voice of dido and rahman together in the 'if i rise ' song.. its a great moment that rahman has once again been nominated for the oscars... he is the greatest musician india has ever produced.. he is the 'mozart of madras'.. a true gem in the mould of the great mozart...

From Roja to Ravan or CWG anthem he is composing same tune and varying only nodes some times high some times node. He got oscar not for his song but for taking part in a movie which shows India down.

when compared to other greats of Indian cinema. For westerners, it's become imperative to elevate muslims where it matters to absolve themselves of the very crimes they commit on them elsewhere. Rehman should not have accepted the Oscars in the first place as a protest. But fame and money power are too irresistible for many people. He proved to be no exception, though I do not blame him for his weakness.

Crazy thinking...What the hell in the world has the Oscar academy or AR being a Muslim got to do with US committing crimes against humanity?..
It does notb deserve even an local award. He did not deserve the earlier award for Slum Dog Mill. Just because he got one earlier by prejudice does nlot mean, he deserves more.
