the two best writers ever in English as far India is concerned. Amazing touch and feel of the country. When you read todays pretenders of the English novel, these gentlemen come across as timeless. And the closest any one came to doing justice to Mr.R K narayan on the screen was Shankar Nag with Malgudi Days. Though both author and director are no more their works of art will illuminate our lives for ever.
Pearl Buck was chosen to write the screenplay because the director of the English version, Danielewski had just completed filming a Pearl Buck novel. I don't think she was really Dev saab's choice or because she was recognised in India.

There were few modifications in the movie to make it more appealing like why Rosie leaves her husband and how she comes back to Raju's funeral. But to me the one thing missing in the movie was the town of Malgudi which is a living breathing character in all RK novels.

I have read the novel. And it is a fabulous work of literary subtlety that has transcended time !!
Read it yourself from cover to cover to understand this.
I have not seen the movie (neither will I ever). But I read one review of Guide the movie written by Mr. Khalid Mehmood. And I am thankful to myself that I have not seen the movie even by chance !!

I have read the novel and seen the movie, and clearly The Guide novel is a class apart. The Guide movie is not that bad, maybe it has not adopted the novel verbatim. RKN may be right in criticising it. But as a standalone movie (for majority of them who has not read the novel) it is way ahead than any of the Hindi movies at that time. And that is the reason for its success.
