Urumi NOT worth watching
by Guest on Apr 04, 2011 06:14 PM

Santosh Sivan disappoints from a whole movie perspective. But certain shots and locations and very TYPICAL Santhosh Sivan trademark ! I will give 100 / 100 for those very few scenes and the song "Aaro Nee Aaro". But right from the story line, its a disaster. I was completely lost numerous times not understanding anything going around. The cast has been a failure most of the times, Genelia is better off as a chocolate babe, Prabhu Deva's malayalam is too confusing to understand most of the times, and the costumes just not making any sense!

Indie period movies
by SK on Apr 04, 2011 12:51 PM  | Hide replies

General trend is to dilute the intensity and mystery of period movies by unwanted romantic angles and worse still - song dance sequences featuring modern guitars, keyboards and drums! And these pieces are marketed as the highlights of the movie! What a pity!

Why don't they invest that money into making more believable action scenes or technology that might make the movie more believable?

Also somebody can take a malalayalm rocky or predator for Prithviraj wants to show off biceps. How does this stand against the macho role portrayed by Russel Crowe in Gladiator, where his intensity spoke more than his muscles?

and how abt the costumes. this has to be the worst depiction of 15th century costumes in malayalam cinema. and some people want us to beleive that this is some sort of classic. forget gladiator this doesnt even come close to that epic failure of santosh sivan's called Asoka.

I believe Prithiviraj can can bring new films with more experiments. A film like Urmi links the culture of historical part of place in Kerala to that of foreign nation like Portugese, similar to Pazhsiraja. In a way movies like this can bring malayalam films to limelight. Good effort by Prithviraj, good going and good luck

Urumi is good, lets accept it, even though I am not a big fan of that big-mouth Prithviraj. Saving grace is Genelia and camera work.

Stop and think before you toss in the coins for Urumi!

Typical santosh sivan film, the usual formula. Lots of nice shots, great locations, lots of scantily clad vampish cleavege-showing women in bizzare period costumes. Melodramatic music with random hotch-potch of celebrities who seem to be in the movie just for the heck of it. As for the cinematography, by Indian standards its magic, but by international standards its jsut on par or average. Apart from all the drumbeating, swordplay and histrionics, this movie is simply another gimmick by sivan to waste some unsuspecting producers expendable income. Santosh sivan seems to follow the typical bollywood formula, lots of gimmicky camera moves, panoramic locations, overpaid actors and a hacked up script which is stitched together by lame direction. So before you rush into watch this so called 'visual feast' be it known that it is just mere EYECANDY which won't appeal to your intellect if you're smart enough to count to 1000. What the hell is that moron prabhu deva in it for and vidya balan...and some other ornamental characters. Santosh Sivan...stick to cinematography, the average indian filmgoer is already being punished severely by one too many quacks who think they are storytellers. So please spare us the grief.

FYI... Santhosh is one of the producer of the film! (Have you seen it?)

Before you toss in the coins...think!

Typical santosh sivan film, glossy, full of camera gimkicks and tons of well lit, well graded sequences. As a visual artist I find it amusing but predictable and only by Indian standards is this guy a technical wizard. By international standars, he is average. Also another typical aspect of sivans films is vampish scantily clad women showing a lot of cleavage revealing. The randiness factor is aplenty and well done again to Sivan for maintinaing the man-bait. Direction wise, it leaves a lot to be deserved. Prithviraj is turning into the Indian steven-seagal with pointlessly melodramatic punch-em-up flicks. Rest of the cast except Arya and a few others seem to have done a decent job. What was the moron prabhu deva and avidhya balan there for? to ward off evil eyes. Sivan seems to bezeroing in on the bollywood formula of throwing in random celebrities and a hotch-potch story that serves only one purpose, EYE CANDY. Enough Said!
