The Three Is

Whe you read the book Elizabeth Gilbert describes why she chose the 3 countries Italy because she was always intrigued by the Italian language, according to her it was the most romantic language and she wanted to learn it from the people of the land itself and know more about the culture/people who speak it.
India- when she was going through middle life/emotional/spiritual crisis, she came incontact with a Hindu spiritual leader and found solace/comfort through meditation and chanting. And decided to devote more time to meditation under the guidance of her Guru in The Ashram( thats why she doesn't spend time travelling through india, although she is very tempted to).
Bali- she visits to meet the old medicine/spiritual psychic who had 2 years ago told her that she would loose all her money/belongings but will regain it soon.
and he had asked her to come back again and promised to teach her t the Balinese style meditation.
so she clearly had goals and motives for visiting these countries and the fact that she finds love in Bali is purely incidental, she wasn't visiting Bali to enjoy the beach life or searching for love- it just happens!
Infact she resists the Brazilian man at first.
I haven't seen the movie but the book was exceptional.

I stay in a foreign land now....it feels sick when India is thought of as just .....elephants,snake charmers and poor people....anything that showcases this ,be it movies ,articles ,songs.....even if it is a blockbuster, oscar winning, like slumgdog millionair...it is sickening...

heart and soul
by rashideshpande on Sep 16, 2010 12:04 PM  | Hide replies

The heart and soul is missing ,everybody is out to make oneself comfortable......."the woman in the wheel chair left stranded" sums up this gen. they are ready to relate and talk about a movie but are unaware of their surroundings and their role in in it...

I like the last para of the write up...summing up the hypocrisy of human nature.

Well.its the new age mantra going by the film...I travel therefor Iam..

had u read the book u would have had so many questions! Guess movies tend to leave a lot to the imagination. Suggest u read the book and then try watching movie again!

Fully agree with you!!!
Book was written very well. It would be sad if they are not able to portray it correctly in the movie.

Read the book
by sharvari dixit on Sep 15, 2010 05:32 PM  | Hide replies

In the book, there is indeed a reason mentioned why she chooses to visit these 3 countries...Italy because she always wanted to learn Italian, which motivates her further to go to Italy, India because she is inspired by a Guru, whose session she once attends in NY and Indonesia because the medicine-man predicts her future during her first business visit to Bali that she will come back & stay in Bali for 4 months, so she takes this chance to visit it again & turn the medicine-man's prediction true...

Well its true that not all people with even stronger worries & miseries in life get to travel likethis around the world for 1 full year...but she dares to do that as her oublisher already buys the book that she plans to write during her visit to these 3 countries...

I hope all this is evident in the movie..

Anyways, books are better than movies!

no point comparing cinema with books. Both are totally different mediums.
