They have measured the success of Gupi Gayen Bagha Bayen in commercial terms following their belief that anything commercially successful is great and anything thats not is a junk. So they feel Tapen Chattopadhyay is "hero" of a box-office successful "comedy" called "The Adventures of Goopy Gyne and Bagha Byne". If rediff wants to really pay their homage to this actor of highest order they should have mentioned referred to how this man smoothly went under the skin of the character unlike many thespians on whom rediff spends millions of words throughout the year like Amitabh, Shahrukh, Aamir, Salman, Hrithik etc etc. Till his death he was referred to in Bengal as Gupi because he immortalized the hinterland character Gupi on the celluloid - please show me if the superstars of Bollywood would ever be referred to by the name of the character they played. They would always remain the Bachchans and Khans with all the layers of cosmetic paints on their faces.

Well, I think there is more sentiment in your viewpoint than practicality. For a website like rediff, based in US, the very fact that they have given space to a unknown face like Tapen is commendable. Goopi Bagha was essentially entirely a Bengali flick for bengali audience unlike other Ray movies. And even then not many of the 70's and 80's born actively remeber him as a theatrical great.

Your argument is quite flawed here.
A person is usually called by the screen name if his one character overshadows every character he has played.
Amjad as gabbar, or priya Tendulkar as Rajani or even Smriti Irani as Tulsi.
Amitabh has so many characters that he is not referred to by any name.
Aamir is known to go deep into the skin, but even he is rarely reffered to by the character's name.
On the contrary a Jadip will always be remembered as Surma Bhopali.
All said and done, Tapen was a great fit in Goopy Gyne adn Anup Ghoshal also deserves due credit for being his voice for so many wonderful songs, not forgetting Ray the great.

Jagdip as Soorma Bhopali pitted against Tapen Chattopdhyay as Gupi Gyne - WHAT A JOKE !! Aamir Khan getting under the skin of the character - huh !! Compare his Bhuvan with Mithun in Mrigaya - you would understand how an uneducated rustic character behaves vis-a-vis an artificially stylised "gaon ka chhoda".

Seems like your personal liking for the movie is overshadowing your sound judgement. Goopi Gyne in a the wide world of Cinema is a dot in the night sky. So lets not lose that perspective. The world has rather remembered Amitabh as Vijay of Deewar or Agneepath than Tapen as Gupi. And if you deny that, your judgement is severely skewed and equally flawed.

I believe you forgot what Audrey Hepburn mentioned when she was delivering the Oscar speech for Ray.

Whatever she said, she didnt mention anything about Tapen C or Goopi, which is the point here. I have not commented about Ray's work or its global reach or appeal.

Rediff's reporting is always very insensitive. How can they show an actor's picture in place of a dead person??????
Re: Re: Re: REDIFF
by Partha Das on May 25, 2010 04:27 PM
What do you mean by that?? The actor is the person who has died and thats the picture on the article. Where is the mistake?
