I infact never knew that there is a movie called 'To Kill a Mocking Bird!' and yes, films are audio-visual medium, despite of that most of the movies based on books, fail to make the same impact. I have not seen any of the old classics, but recently I have seen a few, my favorite book 'Kite Runner' also has been made into a movie, but the essence seems to have lost..books are like painstakingly cooked meals which we get to relish word by word and the beauty of it is that we begin to see the characters in our mind. But when the story is chopped to fit into 2 hour frame, the beauty or the flow of the story is definitely gone. I must mention Deepa Mehta's 1947 EARTH here. It was based on Bapsi Sidwa's The Ice Candy Man. Aamir plays the character which is exactly like the ice candy man in the book. Though the movie ends halfway thru the book, but every character is perfect. Also with Namesake..even though each and every word of the book can not be shown in the movie, the essence remains the same..
What do you mean by saying "very few people have read the book"?
This book has sold more than 30 million copies, and has never been out of print ever since it was first published in 1960. It's probably available in every single public library that you care to visit.
In contrast, the film although an Oscar winner, is rarely seen in any video library or even referred to anywhere.
