was a big copycat flicking tools from all over the world...his "yeeba jeeba sheeba" music was an oft-repeated headache....he composed a few good original tunes...but then Harbhajan has also scored 50's...

East or West Raja is the best
by venkat v on Mar 05, 2010 07:29 PM  | Hide replies

King of Melody. ARR is nothing in front of the real king. While Raja's songs are great, his re recording in movies are even better. There have been movies which were hits just because of Ilayaraja.

I cannot compare RD Burman and Ilayaraja.. they both are from different eras and different industries. If so many say RD is great then he should be great as well. But dont compare Ilayaraja with ARR.. Raja is much much better

Why does Tamils have this complex of putting everything down that is not Tamil? Last time it was Gulzar, this time it was Pancham. Comparing Tamil to Bolllywood artists is like comparing apples to oranges. And while popularity of Tamil artists is limited to Tamil-speaking populace, popularity of Bollywood artists reach far beyond - almost entire India and Bollywood fans across the world

Why should there be one best?

Every composer has his own unique style. Why not enjoy the variety instead of looking for one best?

Agree. Illayaraja is great.

"Best" depends on who you follow more. For a non-tamil guy, Illayaraja doesn't make any mark and the same for Sanker-Jaikishen, Laxmikat-Pyarelal. The same is for a tamil guy. S-J, L-P are just unknown. But RD... he is well known and adored by all.

Rehman is far far behind than these legends. Just winning some awards (remember, those awards he hidn't won on him own, but on Danny Boyle as Rehman has given much better numbers than those in this movie).

I luv Illayaraja's music and soulfull tunes, but when it comes to master of art it has to be RD.
RD could make music out of anything like a comb or musician's back, just about anything.

@Dhantannan
Rediff is not a proper lobby to talk abt ppl like RD and his compositions... i dont think any of his compositions were mediocre... all were the best and today nobody can even come close to his work... if jai ho can get oscar then RD burman compositions deserve much much more than an oscar....anyways he was a different league together... thanks to his composition there are many times atleast i dont feel lonely

exactly. Infact people just associate him with high energy music but are not aware of the calssical gems RD gave. One of the best if not the best. The kind of control he had on sound, rhythem, and melody, no one else has or had.

And not to forget, his background score is among best.

His background score in the Rishi movies and other 70s movies , created a character for the movie.

Background score, especially during credits.
That kind of music is in very few movies, lately my favourites have been Lemony Snicket's , and the Bourne series.
