This man can sure make the atmosphere look "Eerie" & "Uncomfortable" for 3 hrs..,
what he lacks is, The much required "Clinical Twists"/ "Anti - Climax" which most of horror movies should have
like "A blonde getting murdered in Psycho" or ,
"The culprit leaving behind a Trail & getting it back - & the like,
Should see this movie,Frenzy, where this blonde murderer leaves his Coat pin at the slaughter point, & makes a really "tremendous" effort to get it back
With him, that never happens & the picture simply falls to some "Noiseless Still", in between.. still he does create a lots of unexpected things to happen, Unfortunately, it never happens!
I am a huge fan of the anime and I watched it countless times. I still watch it. I was waiting for this movie to be released and was all hyper about Shyamalan directing it. Mallu-Love! There were many previews stating that Shyamalan was a racist & biased about the casting but I always found reasons to support him. After all it was an anime-it hides true identity. All the pre-production visuals seemed very appealing & I thought the movie is going to be a bigger than the anime! But what a disappoinment! I believe there was 20 chapters in the cartoon for this book and he had to comprise it to couple hours. That's a hard task. But he stripped out all the fun from the cartoon & made it a depressing, preachy movie! Ugh! The dialougs in the cartoon series is short, wise & witty ! That's what made it so successful. Shyamalan portrayed Katara to be so depressing, weak & her performance was horrible! Noah & Dev Patel on the other hand did fairly well. They could've done better. I'm still struggling to say bad about Shyamalan because I was a loyal fan of him until The last airbender. I saw all three books by the anime & may be that's another reason why i hated the movie. The same happened when I saw Harry Potter. The movie didn't have the effect of the book. The visuals were good. True to anime. The anime characters are immature and geeky in the begining & matures with each episode. M
Aseem is no different. But fact that Shyamalan is expert at bungling was deteced when last air bender was scheduled to shoot the movie. So not much damage has been made like District 8.
Aseem says that most of Shyamalan's films apart from Sixth Sense & Signs were Box office failures. If the Box ofice of Unbreakable, The Village & Happening were tallied, most studios will be happpy to have such failures. Only clear failure was Lady in th Water. That was a misstep & thats the film that took him down big time. Moreover his profiling of the film critic in Lady in the Water has forever doomed him the eyes of all critics incluing Aseem. Thats a mistake that cannot be redeemed. Anyways Critics always find his stories unimagniative & climaxes illogical mostly due to the fact that they did not catch on the first time & the fact that each of them wishes they could have written something as smart.
Don't say all his movies are crap! Sixth sense is marvelous and has the best climax ever. The direction is outstanding, that you have to watch the entire movie again to believe the end twist. Watch again if you have not just to ensure that in none of the scene he is shown as interacting with characters than the boy. His bullet wound is also hidden and shown only in the climax in a poetic way.
Unbreakable- Beautiful screenplay, amazing characterization , The climax is again a masterpiece where he makes you understand the story in ten seconds.
The happening- Climax is not as strong as usual, but the screenplay is again thrilling.
The village - is also good through the movie, a bit slow, finally with his touch in climax as usual and the portrayal of the blind woman it is a quite decent movie.
The signs- Though a declared hit, it is disappointing .

You are right that indian directors are the best in the world but not the ones listed above. Hrishikesh Mukherjee, Priyadarshan, Basu Chatterjee, Kundan Shah of Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro fame are exceptional directors and truly make paisa vasool movies.
