I am a very big fan of Maniratnam and I must say after watching the Hindi version Raavan, I felt how come Mani ran out of ideas?
The movie lacks the stroke of brilliance that is normally expected from Maniratnam. Vikram's is absolutely expression-less. So is Abhishek. Aishwarya Rai is okay, but nothing great. The Hindi dialogs are atrocious. It is very clear that Maniratnam cannot make his movies in Hindi, period. Mainly because it is not his mother tongue and he doesn't know the Hindi nativity. I can't imagine Hindi actors talking very short sentences just like you find in Maniratnam's Tamil movies. Mani should STOP making films in Hindi, as he clearly lacks the clarify on how to make movies of his style in Hindi. It is better he makes movies in Tamil and then dubs them into Hindi. Similar nativity problems occurred in his earlier Hindi ventures (Dil Se, Yuva, Guru) though the dialogs in those movies are not as bad as Raavan. I felt let down by Maniratnam after watching Raavan Hindi version.

For you kind information Guru and yuva were gud movies and they were in Hindi. Just bcz Ravan is not up to the mark and in hindi doesn't mean that Mani can't make good movies
Raja Sen's review is as hamming as Abhi's acting.Nonetheless, nice movie, different and complicate adaptation and above all, intelligent movie...worth my money

Don't care about Raja Sen's review. Reading quite a few comments here, understand that this one is not for the masses, who make Ajab Prem ki & Wanted a hit. This one is not for someone who likes Kaminey and MNIK over 3 idiots. This one is not for someone who expects Ramanand Sagar's Ramayan. If you've read Aranya and Sundara Kaandam (sections of Ramayan that this movie relates to), you'll enjoy the subtle parallels that Mani draws and how he sees the characters react / live in today's world. Visuals are stunning (a movie to be watched in big screen), background score and music apt (read awesome) and fantastic adaptation / screenplay (again you'll appreciate the screenplay more if you've read Aaranya and Sundara Kaandam). I thoroughly enjoyed this movie.
Never expected such a frivolously superficial movie from Mani who has been known to create materpieces of emotion and craftiness.Raavan is devoid of a script and as remarked by experts the film editing was the last nail in the coffin. The movie staggers from one scene to another without keeping the viewers attention for maore than aminute. One is forced to look around and not suprisingly to find that others are also doing the same.
