I've found the crop of singers much better this year as far as numbers go. The last time II had such talent was in II2 with Karunya, and he was only one. Naushad, Shashi, Rakesh, Sreeram, Bhumi, Shivam are amazing. Swaroop has a very strong voice, though he lacks the polish. Arpita too is a strong vocalist. Manisha's voice only suits salsa; she has been a failure with every other song. Tia looks pretty, but lacks the talent to make it to top 5. Yashraj is good, but yesterday he sang a few keys below the ones required for the Kishore number, although he put in a lot of verve, and that spoiled the song for me. Of course, singing like Kishore is next to impossible.
Pyarelal's presence and orchestra made it a show to remember. It also brought out the one major difference in music then and now; THEN it relied on a singer's strength, NOW it relies on electronic instruments. No wonder many singers sang out of sync...the songs sung by Lata and Kishore in those days are very difficult, and these contestants have yet to reach anywhere near that mark.
And of course, Ranbir rocked. Not only he looked real eye candy, but his sporting behavior won him many brownie points.
only sreeram is good this time.. girls are trash... arpita is bit diff..with her pitch.. that swaroop is a pain.. guys are ok.. atleast better than girls.. manisha, tia, bhoomi are just a waste on this level.. indian idol is becoming more mediocre yr on yr.. american idol still produces good talent even after so long.. many winners and contestants were really good..unlike ours..

its only abt talent.. if maini or swaroop or yashraj were superb.. i'd back them..not cause they are north indians..
very true... thats why all such contestants in these singing competition dnt get chance of playback singing... all dese r befooled by channels, judges and media... these prog giv a stage bt cnt assure for playback singing... the main reason behind the failure of all these contestants is they are nt gud in classical singing... unless u wnt hv strong base of classical singing, u wnt b able to stand in competiotion of playback singing.... it hs been proved a no. of times that the winner or top 5 singers in such rubbish competitions hvnt got chances of singing even by those composers who wr their judges....cz dere base is nt strong...

Indian Idol contestants have become playback singers. Abhijeet Sawant has sung for a film, Antara Mitra (she came last week as a special appearence) has sung in Raajneeti. Karunya (Indian Idol-2) is a popular Telugu film singer.

No that is not true. What you are saying is the work of a music director. The talent of a singer comes based on how well ( pitch, rythm, expression) they can sing a song. Originality is a trait of music director.
