Udaan is the Best Hindi Film of the Year thus far in 2010
by Rajesh Ray on Jul 25, 2010 03:20 PM

'Udaan'is undoubtedly the best Hindi film thus far to have been released in 2010 in terms of its fantastic script, direction, acting, and music / background score (very apt for the theme / setting).Rajat Barmecha, the film's protagonist, is a star in the making....have not seen such a wonderful and natural performance even from so-called experienced stars of Bollywood for a long time. Hats off to Anurag Kashyap for such a great script though the ending was a bit "filmy" but I guess the Scriptwriter / Director wanted to end the film on a high with a message of hope and a better future for the audience...and damn rightly so, in my opinion.'Udaan' is indeed high quality cinema of the first order which will be remembered for a long long time.

Some idiot below has commented that there is no need to make a film dark "just for the heck of it".He is obviously naive, inexperienced and childish...someone who hasn't really experienced life in the true sense until now...seems to have had a highly cosy and cocooned existence until now and has therefore developed a childishly romantic view of life / the real world. Whos says that all parent-child relationships are all fine / perfect....quite often they can go terribly wrong, as this film very realistically / touchingly depicts.

Realism
by Abhilash on Jul 23, 2010 09:41 AM

The movie comes across as very real and you can almost feel the frustration of the boy, and even that of his father.

Rohnit Roy at his best! A must watch for all cinema lovers.

An occasion to relish
by sudeep panday on Jul 22, 2010 10:04 PM

I can understand that when an average Indian get into a movie theatre, more often then not he is expecting an out of the world experience, movies which will keep him away from mundane proceedings of life, movies which boast of exotic location designer clothes, almost flawless and beautiful faces facing almost non existing problems as such anyone of us will be pleased to face in real life, perhaps no offence to any of them, but when some one makes a movie which reflect the true image of us, most of us would not be willing to view it, but then it is the true work of art and let it be appreciated and adored by those who really don’t get much occasions for it. Udan is such an occasion and if you are waiting for it since a long time then go and spoil yourself.

Extension of TZP
by Kiran K on Jul 19, 2010 06:04 PM

This is another extn of TZP atleast in TZP there was mother to sympathize with child, here father is very cruel and unconvincingly strict. Slow and boring. It is really not entertaining. But effort by actors-director is sincere.

Below Average Fare
by Rajesh Venkataramani on Jul 18, 2010 09:41 PM  | Hide replies

Sometimes so called intelligent indians tend to go over aboard in appreciating the so called hatke fare.

Udaan is extremely uni dimensional and boring most of the times. What at best should an hour long is streched interminably beyond beyond 2 hours. As a whole it is amaturish and half baked.
Actors have done their part pretty well and music and background score are impressive and some of the poetry is captivating but it does add up or leave an impact. I was desperately waiting it to end as it seeming to go no-where.

I beliveve there is no reason for flimakers to be dark just for the heck of it. Anurag though brilliant at times have seem to have patented to this selfobessed dark movies. This again as absurd as Karan Johar and iks overly sugary stuff. While later seems to be moving away from it Anurag and the likes seems to have stuck and it is getting tedious

Udaan is poor and let us be candid about it.

@ Rajesh: If you can give me an example of a better made movie this year and a movie with such an no-clichd-approach then I would think of buying ur argument. Else, you do not know what cinema is & I am afraid how much exposed you are to the world cinema.

None of the Hindi movies so far this year has made the cut for me.
To the self appointed high priests like Subhajit I probably know no more about World Cinema than you would ever know even if you live hundred lives.
Sheer amateurishness of Udaan comes out in number of instances like
a)      When Rohan talks to his friends they mention that they are doing great and one of them has got to run his Father’s Restaurant’s business and guess what they have doubled the profit in a month or 2. Too realistic for hair brained people like you I guess
b) In this age of Internet and Social Networking Rohan prefers keeping in touch with his friends only by making telephone calls from a tea shop. It might have worked in 80’s looks completely out dated today.
c) Without any clear idea about his own future, Rohan prefers lugging his younger brother along with him for his outlandish idea of working in his friend's restaurant and realizing his dreams. If this is realistic then he and his brother are bound to be shaken by the rude reality of life. Growp up guys this brazenly foolish and there is nothing remotely uplifting or liberating here.

a. Its not completely unrealistic to double the profit in a month or two. Probably the restaurant was making very little profit. Not nearly as unrealistic as you make it out to be.

b. About Rohan calling his friends instead of text/IM, when did the movie say that it is set in 2010? The whole setting of movie seems to be early 1990's (e.g. Ronit's old car, dont see such cars now)

c. Rohan says it clearly in his letter that its not going to be easy for him to raise his brother. But he'd try his best and give him a better life than living in that hellhole or in a boarding school where he would grow up completely deprived of love.

I feel you need to leave your own prejudice out of theater before you go to watch a movie. Try it next time.
