Bala definitely deserves the award
by krishna gn on Feb 01, 2010 09:17 AM

Bala is the best director in tamil cinema at present. No other director has the guts to make a thought provoking and a commercial combo movie on beggars. Many directors would have made an art movie which would be showed in film festivals. But Bala made a mainstream movie. Even though the film was too dark(a few scenes could have been edited), the overall effect was good. Keep making the same kind of movies, Bala. I dont want to see a regular commercial movie from u. Pooja also deserved an award. Maybe next time.

Who is this Shaji..
by Giridharan Ramamoorthy on Jan 29, 2010 11:34 AM

Good that one deserving director for a deserving film got the award!. But in the article it was quoted that Mr.Shaji has said a remark "Frankly, I never expected a film like Naan Kadavul from Tamil".. i dont know whether has ever seen films from Mr.Jayakanthan.. those were classics too.. I think Tamil is mostly the sensible industry with right balance between commercial entertainers and thought provoking films.. So Mr.Shaji thank you for choosing the right candidate and stop saying "I did not expect such films from Tamil" because none cares.

Bala is nothing in front of Prabudeva. He should have got the Best Director National Award for making a film like 'Villu' with Vijay. In the next 5 years, Prabudeva and Vijay will lift Tamil cinema to the wondrous heights that nobody can ever imagine. They will consistently win Oscars for their wonderful performance and will collect Oscars like stamps or coins.

A Big Joke
by kartik swaminathan on Jan 28, 2010 08:29 PM  | Hide replies

Protagonists have to be social misfits, the supporting characters have to act the same way with the dialogues ending in higher tones than the way they started and mostly ask questions, the characters remain the same staid self throughout the movie with incidents having no impact on them, nothing interesting in the stories except a disgusting setting.

If good movies are about shock and awe then Bala deserves to be on a pedestal. Otherwise he will have to seriously tackle the consistently sick storylines, nothing in the movies except shock and awe, shallow characters that are eternally in conflict with themselves. He might as well take a leaf or two from the likes of BarathiRaaja or K.Bagyaraj to understand what a neat storytelling is.

As of today if someone were to make a documentary of Bala’s creations then the only apt title I can think of is ‘Ramblings of a Sick Mind’

Btw Shaji’s comments are quite funny I always thought the best director award was for a specific movie and life time award was for changing the outlook of other movie creators. Going by Shajis comment “Bala leads the pack in bringing a change in Tamil cinema's outlook and approach. He is trying hard to give a new thought to Tamil cinema. That is a remarkable achievement itself” he should have been awarded Dada Saheb Phalke and not National Award for Best Director.

i think the idea of a director, is like a man of the series. not like man of the match. its about presentation. how many people can make a story about beggars, with beggars. its all about pathos, losers. we all like winners, don't we. but among the losers, there is bala the winner. its like a desi version of slum dog, but a different story. the concept is the same. u create a fall guy film, to win an award. probably ayirahil oruvan was supposed to be made that way. but selva didn't have the conviction of bala. i personally feel a o was better than dasavatharam. remember i am not comparing kamal with karthi. that would be blasphemy. selva can definitely do better than a o.but are we ready for such movies?can u stomach a hungry mother's bleeding chest? are u ready for 5 minutes of silence. if no, please watch sundar c movies or captain's movies.

@ Kartik - Agreed that was Bala's style in glorifying violence and making political incorrectness into an art (I wouldn't say "fine art"). But that was before "Naan Kadavul".

"Naan Kadavul" was about a "forgotten people" -- people that we frown upon in the streets, make fun of, and give funda to. Making a movie about them and their plight caught in the mafia -- and doing that by not getting overtly melodramatic and with even a tinge of humor was no mean task. I was disappointed with the Arya track but I thought Bala did just fine -- esp. compared to his much-to-be-desired "Nandha" and "Pitha Magan".

Atlast, someone who thinks like me. Bala sure doesn't deserve National Award for Naan Kadavul. It was a pathetic and half baked movie. A total screwup in the characterization.

I thought Naan kadaval was almost like a remake of Pithamagan. A hell lot of parallels can be drawn between the films, and on any ay I will prefer Pithamagan over NK.
