Just 1 lakh for someone being compared to JK Rowling??
by Savio J on Jan 04, 2010 10:56 PM  | Hide replies

How do you buy the rights of a book for a mere Rs 1 lac that is supposedly a best-seller, by a supposedly hot author? Something fishy there. The other 9 lacs were to be paid if the movie were to be made and if the movie were a hit. So Chetan Bhagat sold his "baby" for Rs 1 lac when he had no guarantee of either??

Me thinks Mr Bhagat is trying to gain every little bit of fame/money he can make now. In 2005, at the time the books rights were sold to VVC, Mr Bhagat may not have been the hot product like he is now. He may have sold for whatever little he got but now after tasting success he has perhaps regretted his decision and is trying to make a big deal of the credits issue. Granted he was not given due credit where due but it was also agreed upon by the him and the makers on paper then...

Dude, he might have sold it for 1 lakh. But no self respecting producer would have credited the author during the end credits after the junior artist rolls!!

n about being famous, He is VERY famous since he wrote his first book five point someone, n prolly left his high paying job out of the country, to return to mumbai and continue with writing. He is the highest selling (Engbooks) Indian author currently. All his books have sold lakhs n lakhs of copies.

n yeaa u can compare what he is to the Genext what jk rowling is to the kiddie folks.

Peace.

The contract mentions that his name would be mentioned in the rolling credits. If he wanted it elsewhere, why didnt he clear it up and ask the producers to re-do the contract and then sign it? Why did he sign it as per how it has been mentioned? Bhagat is the loser here, not VVC or Aamir.

Aamir is distancing himself because he does not want to give more publicity to the loser, Chetan Bhagat

It seems you have never read a good book in your life. You must be a reader of Filmfare, Stardust kind of magazines.
For your knowledge CB is a path breaking writer.
Pls try to develop some good taste. It is strongly recommended to you dear front bencher. Try to develop some class.

VVC says now that u have seen the film go read the book

CB says if you have ready the book go see the film

who will benefit from the controversy, obvious CB and VVC, guys read through this and cut the crap

It will be only a few days before you'd see both the parties hugging each other

Its chetans plot...no doubt about it!
by smart alec on Jan 04, 2010 10:04 PM  | Hide replies

Plot in 3 idiots is derived out of the sequences in the book.

A book not necessarily needs a defined plot. That is not to say 5.sm1 dint have a plot. The plot is basically this. 3 guys get into IIT, face ragging, get entangled with the principal (and his daughter, crib about the education system and the inhuman behavior of the principal and in the end make the principal realise humanism.

Now the treatment is differen. Like the machine instance. In the movie the professor doesn't agree to the definition of machine as something that reduces human effort whereas in the book the professor says that is the definition where as Ryan (ranccho) says how can gymming machines like bench press be machine as they increase human effort.....

so the treatment is different, but the movie is chetan bhagat's plot all the way!!

Whatever it is, Chetan has signed the contract and the contract has been honored. If its 5% of his book or 100% of his book, he has sold the rights of the book to Vidhu Vinod Chopra and so legally, he is OUT OF IT!!! Now he comes and say all trash and tries to gain publicity and fame (I am sure people are now reading his book because of this controversy). Its all plain greed of Bhagat to try all this stuff.

Alec,

You are smart but not all the way. I definitely agree with the plot aspect but coming to think of it , tell me would anyone invest in spending time/money if it was CB ditto on the big screen. Nobody takes that risk. Film making is a risk that every producer needs to cover himself in the best way possible. That leads to twisting and turning the plot so that the viewer is kept absorbed through the whole length of the film.
CB's book is therefore no doubt a good read but not good on a screen. This is where Raju used his judgement along with Abhijat. The final product therefore critically belongs to both Raju and CB. But since Raju made the film he chooses what bnames are to be acknowledged.

I dont know/think if Raju would now go and coax Chetan into including his name in a fresh paperback release of the same book. Would he?

Finally benchpress is also a machine by the same principle as depicted because it reduces human effort to keep the body in proper shape. Lateral thinking my Friend!!

Avi

I disagree with you Avinandan. You are right. But not fully right. The story is the intellectual property of the author and no one else. no matter how many modifications are made.Even in hollywood, no matter how different the movie is from the book, they always give "based on the novel by" in the starting credits.Even Slumdog millionaire had it.Imagine that i have a biological child, but someone else educates & cares for the child and turns him into a successful person.I am still the biological father of the child and will be acknowledged so.The other person can't say that he is the father nor can we both be the fathers. Also I don't see the logic behind them not putting Chetan's name on the opening credits and posters. If anything, that would be an advantage because it was a bestselling book and has got its fan base already. Which means more tickets sold!! WTF s happening here...
