What about a hard hitting movie on reality on the economic situation, which despite recession hired and grew and was one of the only countries to do so...while USA was in shambles....will that win the Oscars despite the depiction of reality..NO..and you know why, because poverty sells....and sells BIG.

An even bigger reality is that poverty and enslavement are such integral accompaniments of life in India for millions that many of their slightly more fortunate countrymen (who imagine they are becoming rich) need to live in denial of the same to sustain their egos, vanity and avoid acute embarassment !!

While flims like Slumdog Millionaire and now this short film get made by westerners, portraying India's powerty, its an irony that an Indian businessman is close to achieving his ambition of owning major hollywood studios.
While most brits has a stereotypical view of India as a poor country of snake-charmers, their posteriors might be resting on the seat of a Land Rover, the car produced by a company owned by an Indian.

What do you mean? Just because there are Tatas and Ambanis in India, poverty doesn't exist?
People like you can stand only escapist bollywood romantic sh1ts. 1/3 of india live with less than a dollar per day and even in biggest city like mumbai, millions live in slums which is so filthy that one will have to cover the nose 1 km away. India has millions of poor, marginalised, uneducated people - everywhere from villages to biggest cities.
Unless and untill we stop pretending that povery doesnt exists here, westerners will make films on such themes and win awards. Thak GOD, atlest they acknowledge the existance of our dirty underbelly. Hypocrats, we indians are.

Zeng, its not just about that. Why is it that only movies on "poverty" fits into the category of "reality"...??? Why is it that any reality stories focsuing middle class indians isnt anything about "reality"..?? and since when hollywood was giving awards only for "reality" movies...??? They do this with indian movies just because only such movies satisfies their ego and also make them feel safe abt their superiority

Then u create an international award ceremony and give awards to 'Hollywood' movies and show ur superiority.
People like you just spit out destructive criticism...If you care so much about it, then make a movie about middle class india and take it out to the world stage.....Why are u wasting ur time commenting about a movie made by a non-Indian......Instead why dont u go to the US and make a movie about the poverty there and bring it out to the world

A bollywood movie would be(apply atlest one of the below, in most cases, more than one) 1. Silly romantic with rich boy loving poor girl or visa versa. 2. A remake of hollywood movie, with added masala. 3. All charcters will be millionaires with even their maids dressed designer saree. 4. Related to upper class youth with fair skin and preferably blue / green eyes.
Common, and you start crying when somebody make movie about the ground reality here. Silly!

That was an avg. movie with good production values. A plain movie, too laid back for a war film. A disappointment coming from MT/Hariharan. You must be out of your minds to expect some serious award for that!
If india is shown as rich ,it a fantasy.whereas if u show india as poverty struck poor country ,its reality.everything shown in Slumdog mollionaire is exists in reality.there is no imagination or fantasy there.thats why it got oscar.no point in crying over these films.first we have to eliminate poverty and improve standard of living.only then these kind of films will stop

We have poverty, but theres a flipside too and thats gaining share pretty fast these days. Its just that westerners couldnt come out of their superiority complex & inertia of impression as yet, they can only see indians as poor and down on knees.

What about movies like Jurassic park, Avataar, Spiderman, Superman, Batman, Startrek etc etc. Do these things really happen in America?? There is poverty in US too. 1 out of 3 kids in US, lives on foodstamps... r u aware of this?? Just coz u r in US, doesnt give you a right to LORD over your fellow Indians.

Yes you are right.. End of the day it is the "perception" that comes into play. All the western folks(Oscar juries too) feel that india is a country of poor and beggars. Someone like Srinivas gone from India, add up to this perception...
