Once u are in the first 5 min of the movie You will realise that uve got somethin interesting in ur hand.Watch it.Good movie
Just like Slumdog,Hurt Locker is a good movie but not good enough to win multiple oscars...The tense bomb disposal scenes are good, but just enough for a discovery channel documentary not a full feature film..... The Oscars have become like our Indian national awards...Hurt Locker is just to show the world that american soldiers face a tough time in iraq ,as now everyone are angry with US soldiers for their alleged torture and war crimes
The real good movies of last year were District 9 and my personal favorite ,Hangover... District 9 was taken in a very different manner and d story was very connected with the Apartheid....

WELL SAID hari,District 9 was the best of the lot and fab acting by the new star in the movie,i also felt inglorious bastards was also good, well acted movie that...
Reasons why Avatar lost to Hurt Locker 1. Avatar indirectly showcases through the characters of the move how USA follow this illegal & forcible colonization in others land. Interferes in other countries internal affairs(Iraq, Vietnam, Afghanistan, Iran, Rwanda, Most of the persian gulf countries), looting their resources(african nations for their diamonds, Gulf countries for their fuel resource)
2. Whereas on the other hand Hurt locker glorifies the US army and its feat in the iraq war, so it was obvious that Hurt locker won. even though avatar was much superior and path breaking in the cinema history couldnt win becoz of bad politics.

I am glad that the Rediff visitors and bloggers are very knowledgeable and well informed. Satish Ramanna is absolultely correct. Many reviewers in America didn't even hear about the movie. They called it "The Hurt What..?". What it shows that the Oscars are politically backed. For eg. How many years did it take to give an African American actor the Oscar for best actor when there were so many good performances but only the whites were preffered, while giving an Oscar to a woman director was given as the reason for Hurt Locker. Avatar badly hit the American political aministration morally and they snubbed Avatar at the Oscars..giving away the oscar to a pro-iraq war movie. Its just an American award show...why does it get world media attention...i don't know?

You forgot to mention that it was made by a woman. Most of the female members of the Academy were determined to award the first female director Oscar to Bigelow and also the best picture and many other awards to Hurt Locker. Biggest joke is Hurt Locker winning even the technical awards over Avatar, which had the best SFX ever seen in movies and best writing over Tarantino.

avatar was a cartoon film. animated characters were teh stars. awarding that movie is like giving awards for brain bereft computer graphics. that is not cinema. do u get it?

I loved the movie.. But I wouldn't say Best.. 'cz I have Saving Private Ryan on top of my list in the genre. That doesn't decrease the importance of the Hurt Locker even by a bit.. it was awesome movie and indeed one of the best of decade.

Agree totally. I wondered why Avatar lost out, but after watching the movie felt that it truly deserved all the Oscars. The direction was superb and totally a no-nonsense movie.
The movie is good only for the intense bomb disposal scenes. Rest of the movie doesnt have enough character development, conversations or insight into the psyche of the soldiers or the war like a classic war movie should have. It can be considered a good action film and technically some of the scenes are good but it's not Oscar material.

on the contrary, the film does focus on renner's psychological adaptation to the prevailing circumstances with an almost brutal intensity...the cyclical psychological progression of a soldier in such testing circumstances serves as a vulnerable reminder of our own humanity...this revelation of humanity is what makes the film what it is. Not the greatest film on the theme...true...infinitely more credible films there have been...but it is worth a mention...if not an award.
