Gowariker and the ego
by Savio J on Sep 21, 2009 06:41 PM  | Hide replies

I cringe to think what a $100 million budget could do to Gowariker. The film would probably be 600 minutes long and Gowariker may force you to sit thru it without a bathroom break!!

But is it me or are Gowariker's films big, preachy, ego centric trips that are average at best?? Having seen his "performance" at some recent awards and the bashing he gives the little people, its quite obvious the man has a gigantic ego to feed and thinks the world of cinema revolves around him! I hope, for cinema's sake, his films succeed... or else for the next 20 years we would have to sit thru his kind of trash like we did with the YRF's for the last 20!

I think his movies are better than average. I have seen 3 of his movies - Pehla Nasha, Lagaan and Swades. I liked all of them.

Rajesh - I agree his movies are better than average, but a little too preachy for my taste... Swades more than Lagaan.. and Jodha Akbar was just plain boring in my opinon... I am afraid he thinks he can do not wrong and the audience will buy anything he sells.. I hope I am wrong :)

get some life man. the incident in the award ceremony was fully justified. you and people like Sajid Khan do not have any right to comment on Ashutosh or make jokes on him. We know what kind of trash movie he had directed.

I wasn't talking about the Sajid Khan incident per se. I was pointing more towards the insult he hurled at none other than his lead actress, Priyanka Chopra for winning the award. He said he could not understand how Priyanka won it for Dostaana and Ash lost for ... guess what... Jodha Akbar? That's just plain rude for someone of his stature... even the Sajid incident could have been handled better by him than make a complete fool of himself and his peers in public!

Savio . i don't agree with u .. it was sajid who with his utter nonsesence stupid comidy always try to preach every one .. but what dud he directed a copy of holywood movie .. he has no rights to make fun or joke of any actor if he is flop or hit .. it was the drama played by the sister and brother duo on stage .. I think Ashutosh did right .. some one should teach that idot sajid a lesson that his stupid comedy needs a limit and if u feel swadesh as an average then .. I feel u r movie taste is too bad .. just put u r list of good movies .. let us see which movie do u like

I agree boss. Have seen Lagaan and Swades (not fully though). Nothing great. My first thought - why him?! Was actually waiting for this movie on Buddha.

Sajid Khan's humor is pretty crappy... AG was right in thrashing him... after all the award ceremony was not "Sajid Khan show"...

Again, I was not referring as much to the Sajid Khan incident as much as I was referring to the Priyanka Chopra incident. Sajid Khan got what he deserved. But award show hosts are paid to do what Sajid Khan does - crack jokes at other's expense. While Sajid does it in poor taste, some others do it a lot better. Like how Boman Irani pokes fun at Aamir Khan everytime in shows.

Ashutosh Gowariker could have handled it better in both cases. If he had an issue with Sajid Khan then he could have bought it up with the organizers or the host in a more dignified manner (private as opposed to public maybe?). And if he felt Aishwarya deserved the award for Jodha Akbar than Priyanka for Dostana then thats his opinion but he did not have to ruin it for Priyanka and announce it to the world the day she got the award... and to top it all, when Priyanka is the main actor in his next film.

whats ur rashee?
by nupur dass on Sep 21, 2009 05:28 PM

Whats ur raashi is based on a gujarati play....it was also adapted as a tv serial on doordarshan years ago and was called 'Mr.Yogi'. The twist in the story is that the hero ultimately marries the 13th girl that he meets, without giving credence to her astrological sign...now, how's that for a spoiler ;)

Indians are too fond of accusing Americans of ignorance of the outside world. What is true is that Indians in general are most ignorant about their own country and history. I have met Indians who have barely heard of Tagore for example. Hardly any, have any knowledge of Indias freedom struggle other than Gandhiji. Kudos to Gowarikar who knows about the Chittagone arsenal uprising under the valiant Surya Sen.

Mr Gowariker,

I live in the US now but I used to live in Vile Parle not very far from where you used to live. I remember seeing you few times at On Toes in Vile Parle with Paresh Rawal. Whenever I saw you, I used to think ..here is the guy from Kachi dhoop show who played insignificant roles in shows like Circus and made interesting but flop films like Pehla Nasha and Baazi...Never imagined in my life that you were so talented and when I saw Lagaan and Jodha Akbar I was blown away....You are one of the very few directors who is taking Bollywood in the right direction. We are proud of you!
