Lata is the greatest Part 2 read the first part first
by babamusic on Sep 13, 2009 10:36 AM  | Hide replies

Part2:Lata slowly managed the family for next few years and attained modest successes. When Lata was 20 years old and Asha 16, lata hit the limelight with Ayega anewala (Mahal)....it was the same year Asha ran away with Lata's personal secretary Ganpat rao Bhosale who was 36 years old and already married with children. This was 40's and the society was quite conservative. Lata was devastated with asha's behavior and her character and she felt that Asha had destroyed the family name and her dead father's reputation. This is the begining of the fued. Asha married Bhosale and had his children. Bhosale forced asha to sing for private mehfils and c grade cheap films...he didn't care upto the time some money was comming in to support his alcoholism. He beat Asha so much that she had two miscarriages after the beatings. When Asha was pregnant with her son anand, bhosale beat her so much that Asha was in the ICU in bombay for 15 days. The pregnancy was miraculously saved...and it was Lata who brought her sister home to nurse her and her children back to health. for the next few years asha stayed with Lata and got back on her feet....this is the time Lata insisted that her female duets be with asha (remember "man bhavan ke ghar" from chori chori etc). Asha was now saved from singing in sleazy private mehfils and c grade films

Lata is the greatest
by babamusic on Sep 13, 2009 10:31 AM

I am a big fan of both Lataji and Asha and think that they are both great. Having said that there is no question among musicians and people who understand music that Lata's voice, her control of sur, her pronunciation of words, and her vocal throw is unmatched in the history of indian music. People like Bade Ghulam Ali Khan saheb who is the foremost name in Hindustani classical music said that he could tune his tanpura by lata's voice and her purity of sur was better than his own, Pandit Jasraj has many times said that he gets emotional when ever he hears lata's voice touch the highest notes and decends to the lowest without much effort or hesitation. If the masters say these things who can dispute...no master has said these things about asha..... Lata Versus Asha: The fued between Lataji and Asha has become a big topic. But read what Asha has often said about it: When Lata and asha's father Dinananth died, lata was 12 and asha was 8. He died peniless and Lata had to do odd jobs as an extra in marathi movies and later as child star in Master Vinayak's (actress Nanda's father) company. In those days a singer made close to nothing and it was hard life. Lata had a big family to support including Asha. Master Vinayak has said and so has Asha that Lata would not eat for days to save money so her younger siblings and mother could eat. Lata slowly managed the family for next few years and attained successes.

Rediff - what about your feature ?
by Nazir Patel on Sep 13, 2009 09:25 AM

Earlier fans could record favourite songs of the birthday singer and you would feature it on your website but you didn't have one for Asha and now there is not for Lata.
Can you please restore the feature like you had for Mohd.Rafi and Kishore ?

Tere Bagair
by Nazir Patel on Sep 13, 2009 09:13 AM

I have in retirement made it a hobby to listen to thousands of songs over the years- Mohd.Rafi and Lata were the best. No one came close to matching their vocal range. There is not enough space to list all the songs here.
Kishore was good in a variety of songs they were nowhere close to the various type of songs Rafi sang. I doubt that Kishore could pull O Duniya Ke Rakhwale.
I request now that you listen to Madan Mohan's unreleased songs in Tere Bagair from yashraj music. The CD has some real gems.

Lataji not letting other singers sing ? Are you on another planet
by Nazir Patel on Sep 13, 2009 08:42 AM  | Hide replies

Why are people harping about Lataji letting other singers sing ? Are they on another planet ? lataji cut down on her singing assignments several years ago , perhaps even many years ago. So she sang the popular Jiya Jale, then she sang most of the songs for Veer Zaara and I heard her Kaise Piya Se in Bewafa and two to three songs for Madhur Bhandarkar. And she has been singing mostly bhajans for some time now. let me state that even with her voice as it is now , it has a far better range and depth compared to other singers. When she sings her voice comes across as larger than life. I wished she had sung the duet of the title song of Rab Ne Banadi Jodi - it would have become a classic. Even when I hear songs like Kaise Mujhe Tum Mil Gayee from Ghajini a duet also well sung by Shreya Ghosal , I wish that a song like that should have been sung by Lataji. There are still many good compositions that Lataji can still render. And the so called monopoly was over long ago. There have been many singers now. Even the likes of Alka and Kavita are not singing as much as before. It has been Shreya Ghosal and Sunidhi singing most songs. So will you all stop this lata has to let others sing. She sang Lukka Chuppi or the duet in Lucky Lips with Adnan Sami.
Then there was her Saadgi- ghazal album. She has sung Hanuman Chalisa and a bhajan for Bhandarkar's Jail.
Just enjoy her melodious songs of the past. What a range of vocals.Forgot to mention that she also sang Khamosiyan Gungunane Lagi

was great

she was a great singer; it is with nostalgia that one listens to her old songs (pre 90's); but have to say her voice sounds very funny nowadays; should let others take over in movie tracks at least....

find me another 81 year old singer in the world who can match Lata's musical diction, her technical finesse and her voice throw and pitch.....what truely is funny is your ignorance...what truely is sad is your lack of regards for a musical institution.....I am sure you will find even your own mother funny and unacceptable one day.....child of MTV era grow up

the point is not whether other 81 year olds sing as well as lata; it is just that her voice has deteriorated to the extent that it will damage her accomplishments from the past. Even the great singer K.J.Yesudas said some 15 years ago that Lata should stop singing. And Mr/Ms babamusic: do not show your culture by throwing personal abuse at people....if you have anything worthwhile to argue, do that in a polite manner....

How many times do we have to keep repeating to people like you that Lataji cut down on film playback singing for several years now. If she sings Lukka Chuppi or a bhajan for Jail or songs like Tere Liye and Do Pal in Veer Zaara ( 2004) what is your problem ?
Tere Liye and Do Pal have become classics and remain popular even now. She also sang long time back the title song of
K3G and quite effectively for Jaya Bachchan.Listen to her recent interviews. The lady hardly sings for movies.

most of the songs she sang in the 90s showcase the deterioration of her voice...
kuch na kaho; diya jale; ddlj etc etc

Have you eaver heard a bhajan album by two greats Pt. Bhimsen Joshi and Lataji? First listen and then come back to me. This album was released somewhere in 96-97. This will clear all your doubts about her.
