Guru Dutt
by Sanjeev Vyas on Oct 23, 2009 05:50 PM

Guru Dutt was no doubt a great director. He may not be a legend according to some. But i cannot wipe the frame to frame scenes of Pyasaa and Kagaz ke phool. Both the films were master pieces of the Hindi film industry. No doubt on that. I do not understand how he was termed pessimistic. I understand his personal life was in very bad shape. He had failed in his love life. May be he had lots of internal pain and sorrow within him, which he was also able to effectively potray. His some other commercial films were also equally appreciable. We miss such dedicated and committed people.

Its such a shame that India has people like Krishna Reddy, who are literate (not educated - as is clear from his comments), who has access to internet, who don't refrain to overuse there right to freedom and they are still ignorant about some of the great personalities of India and Indian cinema

One non-sense comment followed by other. If someboday doesn't know about Gurudutt, you can't say, nobody knows. It may be the time they started watching old hindi movies also does matter. If we apply same logic, how many people may know about Satyajit Ray in next generation of North India.

Well the tragedy of this comment is Guru Dutt himself was a South Indian. These kind of comemnts dont do us any good. We are Indians first.

Gurudutt Padukone's roots are in the coastal belt of Karnataka, from south Kanara district (close to Udupi). His monther tounge is Konkani and he is a Saraswat Brahmin. It may also interest you to know he is a cousin of Shyam Benegal and his uncle is Swami Ramdas (called Papa) of Kanhangad. He spent a considerable amount of his formative years in Almore under Uday Shankar (bro of Ravi Shankar) and also in Calcutta. He broke his first name into 2 Guru Dutt. Due to the Dutt in his name and his Calcutta connection, ppl mistake him to be a bengali.

Arun, thank you for sharing your thoughts.
Guru Dutt seemed to be restless and wanting to do everything to perfection.
Your father was the BEST and you can be very proud of him.
