Hi i am living in Clearwater, FL. I have watched the promo in ZTV. The brief violin piece is really impressive and refreshing. My collegue, a Mexican was so enthralled by this bit and started humming repeatedly. Good genuine music.

Hi I am Srikanth , Music for the Paa is awesome especially the song Gumm Summ Gumm which i heard in Telugu by the same composer in 1986 was equally good with modren instruments.
Every now and then you get a music director like Ilayaraja, he is a genius in true sense. It is true that he cant produce the same kind of tunes now becoz of his old age and the understanding of hindi audience. But I really look forward to have more ilayarajas old songs to be remade for hindi audience, it will be a amazing experience for them. If Hindi audience like AR Rahman style of music they definetly going to like Ilayaraja coz ARR's kind of music revolution started from the days of Ilayaraja.

Satish, I am not sure if you happen to listen to his songs for this year. He has composed for nearly 16 films this year and more than 100 songs. If you would have listened to these gems thoroughly, you would not have come to a conclusion that he can't produce samekind of tunes and old age. Try listening to these gems from Tamil, Hindi, Malayalam and Kannada. Especially listen to his recent Pazhassi raja and try comparing this music with Paa's music, no other composer in the world is as versatile as he is. Totally contradicting styles composition, yet no compromise in melody. We should be really be gifted to live and listen to his songs.
As long as your mind is fresh, you can do anything you want, that what Maestro is proving again and again.

Rajesh, Yes, I am big fan of R D Burman, in fact I have all his 282 film collections and been hearing his songs regularly and the tunes he has composed especially with Kishore, it cannot be compared with anyone.
Even before RDB, there were stalwarts like Anil Biswas, C Ramachandra, Chitragupt, Nausad, SDB, OP Nayyar, Shankar Jaikishan, Madhan Mohan, Ravi (the list goes on) who ruled over from 40s till 70s. If I start hearing those composer's music, I tend to forget this whole world.
That's the main reason these Hindi songs are way popular in south. My dad used to tell me that eventhough they dont understand Hindi, they just go to films to enjoy the music. Such is the power with those composers.
But all these changed when Maestro arrived in 70's and made us to listen to his music which we are drowned so far. Just imagine a composer with more than 900 films in 33 years of service. In 1992 he has composed for 55 films (average of 1 film per week). It is impossible to pick a genre which he has not composed.
All this by one single man, right from creating tune, writing notes, arrangements, recording and without any help from fellow musicians. Music just flow from him just the moment director delivers the situation. Apart from songs, he is the composer who changed the film viewing experience with this enchanting background score. He even corrects actors, directors mistake with his BGM. You have to listen his BGMs, much to talk about this genius.

Alaigal oyvathilai and malayalam song both at Balkis request.Paa is a beauty Good old guitars, solo violin, and his class
Its not Ilaiyaraaja who gave the old tamil tracks for a new hindi film, i think its director Balki's choice to take those old tamil tracks which mesmerized that generation and made Ilaiyaraaja a gem at that time. Even in his earlier first movie, cheeni kum, all the songs are IR's unforgettable old tamil hits. so i think its balki's choice. why balki opted for old songs, that he only knows. whether, he enjoyed all those tracks during his young age and now wanted to use those same tracks for a movie that he makes now, we dont know.
i think such compositions and music arrangements 20 - 25 years back without much electronic help and the whole compositions to be done in a live arrangement. its excellent for those times.
even for now, if you listen the tunes its amazing, but music arrangements may not look so, probably we are used to electronics and loud pritam type of sounds, so this pure music wont sound good for young generation.
but IR can still make better tracks, good example is Udhi Udhi song, but the same is not sure for Hitchki.
regarding lyrics i think IR misunderstood. Tamil audience are tuned to listen his music not lyrics but in hindi people give equal importance to lyrics. so it sounds not fine.
finally, IR misses another chance to have a pan indian presence, but probably he knows that and also dont want to, and balki too thinks so.

The music of the song Gumm Summ is exactly the same as a malayalam song Thumbi Vaa from movie Olangal. The music for that song was also composed by Illayaraja. He has used the same music for the entire song. Its a repeat by the maestro which nobody would have expected from a great musician like Illayaraja.

First listen to malayalam song Thumbi Vaa and then to song from Paa (Gumm Summ). Using an older composition of himself means, Illayaraja does not have anything new to offer.
