Box office only appreciate Shah rukh dancing around with 100 girls and marrying one of them or Akshay beating 1000 goons...Unlike Those films This film need a heart to watch and a brain to think.

i dont aggree..i didn't see any objective or theme in this film other than just being sympathetic to muslims

Acting is excellent as u wud expect. but the story and theme..is sense less
they took bunch of muslim characters and portrayed them in most sympathetic way..it doesn't tell you what the writer/director is trying to convey other than it was horrifyign experience by muslims..

Watachable only if ur bored and at home(without cost involved)

well said slash five. and dont forget the plight of kashmiri pundits along with all those who were killed during train burning by minorities! you'll never see a movie or even a news article on those victims of communal violence.

Ya, I too agree with you, Kashmiri Pandits never got attention from country & never got justice. Its shame that even Hindu film makers hardly cared. All they care about is money.Rest hardly matters to them.
They were exploited when so called anti-communal Congress did nothing. The only help they got was from BJP.& Im really greatful for the timely help from BJP.

yet another stereotype
by slash five on Mar 25, 2009 01:02 AM  | Hide replies

we have a slumdog moment here. just like the western film makers love projecting slums in india. in india its only minorities who can bleed, or suffer or die. everyone else in the majority community - have to compulsorily keep quiet and will go unrepresented. they will be held responsible for everything evil automatically. the elites will root for the 'underdogs' and we have movies after movies showing the suffering of the minorities (even though about one third who had died we re the mjority community).

the number of people who died in the sikh riots were far more. but they will not get represented by a movie. because these elite film makers will not get a award for that movie!

5 star movie
by Vaskar De on Mar 24, 2009 07:29 AM  | Hide replies

every week end we have on an average 3 new releases....
most of them are bakvas....
only 3-4 movies stand out from the crowd in a year....
its the beginning of 2009 but I can confidently say that this movie is one of those rare gems.....
I don't know if this movie was politically motivated as some people would say, but I did not feel any as I was overwhelmed by the powerful human emotions depicted in "Firaaq"

"Fiaaq" (meaning opportunity in a derogatory sense) shows how some people are always on the look out for an opening to accomplish what they desire, be it those people who rob a store and heave their booty in a Honda car or a poor muslim breadmaker who blames his misfortune on his rival, Mehul(we didn't get to meet that character) and wants to get revenge.

Such varied range emotions are rolled into this two and half hour masterpiece that no language can describe it effectively. Such were the events of that time and no matter how much we debate we would never get to the truth, so hats of to the director Nandita Das who was able to draw a wonderful moving picture and showed what Gujarat riots were all about, it was about "Firaaq".

nandita wants a directorial debut award. simple. she choses a subject that guarantees an award. and boy! talk about the timing of the release of the movie!

i saw the movie. even a neutral minded person would hate it. looks like a documentary scene after scene of unconnected story.

Great Movie But.....
by Sunil Gupta on Mar 23, 2009 06:11 PM  | Hide replies

Most of the people who are writing comments here have not even seen this movie.. it was a good movie.. good job mrs. Nandita Das.. Well done Paresh Rawal, Naseeruddin Shah, Shahana Goswami to name a few.. Now let us talk about this movie.. As we all know this movie is about Gujrat incidents... It is a great attempt by Nandita das to show off all that. But it left me unanswered with lots of things. First thing. Godhara happened 7 years back in year 2002. Why this movie is made today.. Wounds had started to heal... but if you release this movie today, i am sure it would scratch those healed wounds. ultimately it fill hatred in people's heart whatever relegion you are from.. if you are real secular you would never want that to happen. but by making this movie, Nandita has been able to polarize the society in two parts which is not good.. As an Indian, I would never want to see my people fighting with each other.. Just to tell you, if a husband dies in a house, we dont remind the wife daily that her husband has died. We want the wife to move on. Same thing here.. .things have happened in past. we need to move on. I dont know whose fault was that..

who started. but i know one thing for sure, it has been 7 years and people have moved on.. we dont need to remind them what happened.. you suffered or not.. u know all this will fill hatred in them.. nothing else.. just to prove my point, you guys could see so many hatred comments on this review.. you know a good cinema is not which divide the people, but the one which unites the people.. and by making this movie, Nandita has not united the people but polarized people.. U know we are writing comment about who did and who did not... 99% of people writing comments dont even know the facts. so i would rather ask guys to show restrain.. and pray for the people who died.. it is time to move on.. again and again scratching those wounds would not solve anybody's purpose, rather it would not let things die down.. it would make people feel bad.. time and again.. so please.. guys let us not allow those people to win who want us to divide.who wants to divide this culture.. we have a great duty and rensponsibility on our souldiers towards this society and nation. poeple who keep reminding those incidents are not doing any good. I do not think those people are secular and nor those people who keep doing these kind or heinous things...to be a secular, u dont need to make this movie... it just divide the society which is not good.. so i would rate this movie as ZERO. My salute to a great nation "INDIA".
