Sukumaran passed away on June 16, 1997. Exactly 12 years and 12 days after your chat on that day with Lohitadas he left us. Somehow that interview has his stamp on it - so moving.
Please do not stop with just this remembrance note. Many of us are irreconcilable to this loss.
Karunyam and Kanmadam were great movies. Kireedom, Bharatham, Thaniyavarthanam etc were his best works as script writer. He lost the plot in Chakramuthu, Nivedyam and Chakram. Overall, a big loss for malayalam Cinema.

I have seen Bhoothakannadi with subtitles, very different from usual movies. I liked it a lot.
I very well remember the 1997's Lohitadas' interview in rediff, loved it and had saved it in my hard disk. This man had such an amazing insight over the life through his characters in the classics, that all the discerning viewers identified with and carried them all through their lives. Even though I started seeing malayalam movies since 1998 only, I was able to look at his body of work and felt that he should have remained as a scriptwriter rather than taking too much time on a project as director. His last few movies (barring Kasthooriman) like Chakkaramuthu, Nivedhyam, Chakram had disapoointed even his ardent fans. But Lohitadas will be remembered forever for his enviable repertoire of work on Malayalam screenplays.

Not entirely correct. There was the movie "Karunyam" (1997) which he directed but not write which was a soul stirring one. But may be after that none was so intense including "Arayannangalude Veedu"(2000) and "Kasthooriman"(2003).

A correction : Karunyam was directed as well as written by Lohithadas. Sorry for that wrong info.

How does it matter to you ? Does it change any of his creations ? Or does it change your life ? Forget it man - leave it to them
Sobha Warrier & Rediff are lucky to get such an interview of Lohithadas in 1997 when he was at his best. I also agree that the movies of him after the year 2000 were not as intense as the ones before Y2K. But that does not make him different - he is the same for everyone.
Thank you Sobha Warrier for coming and writing this piece.
We were expecting a tribute from u Shobha Madam. Thanx to Rediff and Shobha. Lohitadas will always be remembered along with great names like Padmarajan and Bharathan by all Malayalam movie lovers.
