In fact the director of 'Aashi' Sachin Pilgaonkar has freely admitted many times in print that he was inspired by the Hrishi da film... As all cine aficionados know, almost 50% of the Hollywood classics, particularly the comic ones from the 50's and 60's are adapted from French movies. So the quest continues.
