Certainly not best of 2009
by Sajan NR on Jun 11, 2009 09:39 PM  | Hide replies

Inky pinky ponky is worth listening for shreya's rendering.Oli Tharum is not bad while ennadi pandi is usual IR stuff. Nothing new, nothing original either. If this is one of the best of 2009,you sure are an IR fanatic.

Sajan NR -if you ignore the freshness of 'kooda varuviyaa' and the various beautiful elements of 'oli tharum' (a perfect duet btw, which young composers should use as a benchmark for composing - the strings used in the 1st interlude to give the breezy effect deserves special mention)

if you have to say anything substantial, please come up with the same, dont go around puking your inane stuff

As clear from the way you write, you are a 35 who's grown up to an era were IR was "GOD". But these days so many hold the centre stage(ARR,HJ,YSR,GV,DSP,Vijay Antony,James Vasanthan...etc...etc...)IR comes out with off beats or mediocre movies or low budgets....And I really dont think one needs to be a sound engineer or a music expert to like film music. If so I dont see Kanthaswamy selling a lakh cds in a week, neither Anniyan & VA setting new records. And I need not be an expert my opinions here, this is a public forum. So be cool...This IR album wont sell a lakh in an year.So dont bother about my "silly" opinions either. I repeat my opinion"Strictly Average Only(& For IR fanatics)"

And to add, IR is still held at his 1980's 1990's recording styles when the likes of ARR & SEL are international in their quality. IR still sticks to classical western, folk. But everyone has his own perspective & if u like his music no worries, he surely is a genius. Naan Kadavul was a masters' work not Vaalmiki.....

Strictly Average Only(& For IR fanatics)
by Sajan NR on Jun 11, 2009 09:33 PM  | Hide replies

music is average at best..of late the only great album from IR was Naan Kadavul. He has been signing a lot and all these songs are similiar. A rural feel to all songs he sings. It seems people just over-rate his music.Naan Kadavul had a couple of songs that we worth of his class & high standards..Nandhalaala also has only 1 great songs rest are mediocre at best. None of the songs except Onnukkonnu (Nandhalala)grow on after repeat hearing.

Sajan,

You are just dirtying this place with your silly opinions! Everyone has an opinion and that alone doesn't make that opinion the truth! If you can say something objectively, it is welcome. Else, you are free to keep your subjective (pre-meditated and biased) opinions to yourself!

She could write on the album only..so if you expected her to say IR proves he is a genious again...may be she should review Naan Kadavul.......

REDIFF REVIEWS!!
by Shekar Sinha on Jun 11, 2009 06:45 PM  | Hide replies

as usual rediff reviews have once again proved that their reviewers are pathetic and clueless when it comes to reviewing one of the best albums of 2009!!

Pavithra is moronic when it comes to musical knowledge and aesthetic sense

Sajan NR - perhaps I should ask you that same question!

this year has seen a revival of IR - if you ignore the freshness of 'kooda varuviyaa' and the various beautiful elements of 'oli tharum' (a perfect duet btw, which young composers should use as a benchmark for composing - the strings used in the 1st interlude to give the breezy effect deserves special mention)

you are barking up the wrong tree here!

if you have to say anything substantial, please come up with the same, dont go around puking your inane stuff on genuine music-lovers

Review could have been better
by vishnubhotla aakarsh on Jun 11, 2009 03:47 PM

"Come the charanam, the tune seems to meander, losing some of its spontaneity. It is mildly appealing but the magic seems to be missing."

Well the charanam is the most beautiful part of the composition.Does the reviewer even know that the song changes its raaga mildly and becomes an exquiste kalyani by the time charanam is on.and the way charanam ends is so unpredictable.Talk of treasuretroves, Koodavaruviya is one.Unfortunate, that the reviewer doesnt think so.

Pavithra Srinivasan rocks!!!!!!!!!!
by Anonymous on Jun 11, 2009 03:26 PM  | Hide replies

Hi All!

Pavithra Srinivasan is back to "rock" with her review of another Ilayaraja album, as she has been doing with his albums of late!

I can't help realising from her words the grandiose delusions she holds about herself! It is time that she has been awarded for being the most tasteless reviewer!

She is only capable of talking subjectively like "the tune seems to meander, losing some of its spontaneity", "magic seems to be missing", "tune is no great shakes", etc. She doesn't even understand that cine music is situational (may be that's because today's MDs don't want to bother about nativity and the character for which the song is composed) and goes on comparing with other songs.

I also don't understand why she wants to say "the maestro has turned out so many extraordinary albums over the decades that he has a veritable treasure-trove of tunes to fall back on" when her purpose is to review Valmiki album alone! This only confirms how Rediff's reviewers are biased and hold so many fixed thoughts without listening to an album neutrally with an unbiased state of mind!

By the way, why is that no Ilayaraja album (even if it is a massive hit among the public) receives more than 3 stars on Rediff reviews while other MDs mediocre albums get 4 stars sometimes? No prizes for guessing the reasons for this contemptous state of mind ;-)

The rule is simple: Raaja is either wrong or usual, for there can't be any more good albums from him - What an "assertive" thought?!!

i still remember the review on rediff of Cheeni Kum. the album was rated mediocre and it kicked series of protests. i read rediff's reviews for a laugh and to know how ignorant a reviewer can be. it would take a lot of music sense to review a musical score by the mastero. unfortunately, rediff, which would give a raving review for a himesh "whats his name" composition, has lost the right to review the mastero's sores. i would suggest that rediff stops writing about the mastero's music. but if you do look at it, rediff usually comes out with a review weeks after a mastero album is released. it looks like rediff develops cold feet to review a album, not knowing wheteher the music is actually good or not. and when they do bring themselves to do it, it is pathetic, simply exhibiting the reviewer's ignorance of music. pavithra, you sure do rock!

Well said..Its high time the reviewer needs some lessons..she has got some fixed thoughts in mind and her intention seems to be insulting the genius rather than listening to the music and only review it

The music is simply great. Now he proved that he can even music for a featuristic film.

I hope that background score will be great as he did for Naan kadavul.
