Golden Globe Awards night
by athena greek on Jan 28, 2009 11:06 AM

Did anyone happen to catch the Golden Globe awards show? I could not believe what an a$$ Kapoor made of himself. It was shocking. He was grinning and jumping up and down like a jack in the box. And he got up on stage and although most of his face was cut off from the shot, you could see part of his sliding moustache... and his teeth. He was acting like as if he produced the movie, directed it and also was the original author of the novel.

On the other hand, Shahrukh Khan who came to present the movie with Pinto, was so dignified and confidant and spoke with class. It was impressive.

Now everyone please don't jump on my neck by bringing in Hindu/Muslim/etc. My only point is this. These people on an international arena are mascots of India. They represent our country. Shahrukh's dignified behavior and his confidence would make any Indian proud. On the other hand, it was highly embarassing to watch Anil Kapoor act like Danny's stooge.

On a side note, Rahman was a little bit nervous, but in true desi fashion he thanked the one billion of Indians while accepting his award.

Further, the unprecedented Golden Globe and Oscar nominations have strengthened my belief about ulterior sponsorship of this movie. Lagaan and Taare Zamin Par with much better execution did not manage to impress the juries but this film did. Because the west only wants India to be portrayed this way. Indian directors have made much better movies and A R Rahman has given better music in other movies. However, the westerners have noticed only Slumdog Millionaire. Doesn't it seem a ploy to get maximum viewership for this movie and spread the maligned, distorted views about India in the minds of westerners who may not still know much about India. Slumdog Millionaire seems to be the work of a retarded foreign director who wanted to carry out the desires of his sadist western masters (or sponsors).

I disagree with your comments!!!! the success of SLUMDOG is really credited to Vikas Swarup and then subsequently to Simon Beaufoy(spelling!) for a great screenplay. A unique way to tell a love story! fresh and different! It really required the collaborative efforts of Vikas, Simon, Tessa Ross (channel 4),Danny Boyle and Christian Colson along with Lovleen Tandon to bring this to reality. I agree that the film has a lot of cliches, however, the film has a certain electric energy and style and bombay definitely is a character well exploited in the telling of the story. No indian film maker that I am aware of has done it any better except maybe Ram Gopal Verma. But a story that is so well identifiable to both western and eastern audiences happens rarely and Danny Boyle along with Lovleen Tandon pulled it off very well!

It is not a truthful picturisation of Vikas Swarup novel. The movie is distorted with Director's own prejudices. Consider this:
1. The scene where all four tyres of the vehicle are stolen, the guide says 'this is real India'. The driver beats the boy and then the US tourist (showing compassion and saving the boy) says, "Let me show you real America"
2. Indian police is shown as inefficient and corrupt
3. Employees in the Indian call centers (outsourcing industry of India, the pride of the world) are shown inefficient, unprofessional and careless. There is no data security as the data is accessible to even a chai-walla (tea-vendor)
4. The underworld is omnipresent and maiming and blinding of kids is real and common
5. The central character of the film is not an educated and knowledgable person, he just happens to know all the answers. The film also says that he wins because 'it is written (destiny)'. Is it a sattire on India rising worldwide intellectually? That these people are slumdogs mainly rising because of sheer luck.
6. Even the game host Anil Kapoor is shown as arrogant and a liar.

It is not that I am blind to realities but it is the way it has been portrayed in this film. We have seen much better films but the way this film is sweeping all the awards globally imlies there is a sinister western lobby hell bent on further maligning India in the eyes of westerners who have always known India as a country of snake-charmers and beggars...continued

So many awards are being bestowed on this movie in order to make this immensely popular all over the world. The people particularly those who have never visited India will get an extremely distorted vision about the same.
It is one thing to be happy about other people's success and frankly I have always been inspired by other people's successes. But the dirty coincidences that this film shows are too much for me to digest. Consider for yourself:
1. Is this the best music ever by AR Rehman?
2. Compare this movie with other legendary movies (even with Indian masterpieces by Satyajit Ray & others) and tell yourself does it really deserve the best film worldwide when many deserving entries from India have failed earlier?

I can go on and on but don't want to spend more time on this. Use your own minds and think more about this conspiracy. This is not a movie but a conspiracy. The western audience is delighted because they have seen what they always wanted to see.

In marketing language, David Boyle has offered them a product which goes beyond 'customer satisfaction' to 'customer delight'. Yeah, the West is delighted. And some Indian fools too!

Worst Movie - Slumdog
by avishek roy on Jan 27, 2009 06:28 PM  | Hide replies

My observations

1. Couple of scenes were virtually R*aping us (blinding the kid, maligning the icon like Amitabh Bachchan so badly)
2. This movie shouldn't have been given U certificate. It's strictly for adults for particularly those scenes were too difficult to digest ...
3. This movie is just a masala flick with overdose of masalas ...

Shame on you Mr. Danny Boyle for this s*hit movie ...

Disregards,

Avishek

Dissappointed

I had very high expectations regarding the movie and was really excited to watch the movies, in fact i was the one who told all my colleagues to go and watch the movie but alas.....India has been projected in a very shabby and a dirty way, I mean if they were showing 50% indians 40% were in a negative way highlighted. Is India all about rape, corruption, attrocities, child molestation,Dirt and slums, No its not that way, The first scene itself showing one of the wonders of the world that too in a way which was yuck... and the kid showing the slums and saying this is real india is disgusting.I understant this is the reason why firangis has really liked the movie and got nominated in oscars and TZP got out of it. India is a very beautiful country,it is a diversified country, good, talented people also exist here. Go to places like, shimla, nainital, ooty,Halflong, shillong,Nagaland,Banglore, and so on these places are really cool. I have no words to express how much beautiful my country is and how good are the people as well, Positivity and negativity is everywhere in every country so don't judge only by seeing the darker side.. I feel there is nothing to be proud by a movie like slumdog by just seeing the darker side.

But who said the movie is showing the entire India. Its only Mumbai and that too the slum areas of it. And again its not a story of all slum dwellers. Its just the three children. Read above Danny Boyle himself is saying that Mumbai is a very diversified place. Its a puzzle why Indians are so excited about what the westerners are saying about them and then they either get hurt or are joyed accordingly. The purpose of a movie is just to entertain and its all just a fiction. How otherwise would you explain so many jumps of logic in the movie..

Like the child getting gun, the blind guy smelling to tell Dollar note from Rupee note and also recognizing his long lost friend, the child hero's knowing English language so very well and the entire scene in the call center and so on...

It is just a Movie and that's it.
Don't take so seriously.

So true Mousumi!!!
Leave alone Danny Boyle ... The people like Anil Kapoor and A.R.Rehman should be ashamed of being a part of this disaster ... Pathetic movie this is ...
The movie only and only maligned INDIA, INDIANS, it's culture (may be some part of it is true but there are lot more good things about us) and the Icon like Amitabh Bachchan and his iconic KBC ...
S*hit movie

Dude, First off I dont see anything iconic in Amitabh Bachchan's KBC.. It was a copy of "Who wants to be a Millionaire" and to make a quick buck Amitabh became the host (Check his interview about ABCL going bankrupt and then moving into Television).

Also you definitely seem to be having a inferiority complex about yourself and hence your comment about India and Indians. Someone making a movie on a boy from slums (which incidentally if you visit Dharavi and care to have a look at Asia's largest slum, will see it LIVE) does not define India or Indians. Just like if someone made a movie about drug addicts and rapists in US does not define US.
Also your metallity seems to be like a Crab in a bucket. Instead of being happy that an Indian (A.R.Rahman) is getting recognised world over for their achievement, you and some of these morons seem to be angry about their achievement.
Lastly if you so much feel about India and Indians, you need to start making a difference, instead of noise.

u know that mumbai and dharavi is not the whole india... But the movie is made in english and it obviously portrays "india" to westerners.... there is too much negativity in the movie..... if only the movie was made by some indian director it would have got very bad review... And just look at the title.. slum"DOG"!!!!!... how did it get a U certificate!!!!..... And just because the media is all hype and hoopla about the movie... every body seems to be happy... "IT IS NOT AN INDIAN MOVIE".... plz media.. stop feeling proud about it...:(
