TAPAN SINHA, THE GREAT DIRECTOR
by Atis Bandyopadhyay on Mar 25, 2009 11:43 PM

Incidentall, I got a CD of the film "UPOHAR"(1955)recently and watched it attentively. I really wonder how such beautiful and stunning film could come from a director, during those old days, when technical support was so minimum. This single picture alone is sufficient to establish his great skill as a film director.

Souvik Das
An extremely sad moment for Indian cinema
by Souvik Das on Jan 15, 2009 01:45 PM

We have lost an amazing story-teller. His movies were lyrical and talked about common man despite his own affluent background. Films like "Golpo Holeo Sotyi" (remade into Bawarchi), "Kabuliwala", "Kshudhito Pashan", "Jhinder Bondi" (based on Prisoner of Zenda), "Otithi", "Harmonium", "Adalot O Ekti Meye", "Sagina", "Jotugriha" (inspiration behind Ijazaat) - movies of immense artistic sense. The best part of his mvoies was the ambience of optimism that used to get created - which some cretics strangely termed as "over simplistic and flat". In today's cinema where movies like OSO, SIK, Ghajini et al are termed as legendary, his films might soon be fogotten. But with every cycle of good things coming back, he would live long and long and long ....

Tapan Sinha was one of the few Indian film directors who kept low key but made some amazing movies. I am a south indian who has lived all his life in Calcutta. His movie "Sobuj Diper Raja" was a classic. By the way who made "Bancharamer Bagan"

Banchharamer Bagan was made by Tapan Sinha. It is adapted from a play written by Monoj Mitra. It was remade into Hindi movie starring Aamir Khan, Pran and Farha. Perhaps one of the premier adaptation of a play into a movie.

Shri Tapan Sinha was a great director who made simple films, which were a treat to the discerning audience. May god rest his soul.
