TZP
by biswanath roy on Jan 14, 2009 06:37 PM  | Hide replies

It is really very sad that TZP is out of the Oscar race. Any positive note ending movie from India or any other developing country will meet the same fate. Israel's movie Waltz with Bashir seems to have already won the Oscar for the best foreign movie. Israel is an American favourite, & any shit coming out from there will get favours. TZP was one of Bollywood's best ever movie,& if this is its fate I think India should not send movies in future for Oscar nominations. However we Indians will never learn a lesson that for America India still remains a country of snake charmers displaying their tricks on the dirty streets of our cities.

To deserve an oscar nomination, the westerners want to see only indian poverty, hence movies based on poverty should only be sent. sensible movies are not loved by them. indians should stop yearning for oscars or golden globes.

Why go to Oscars ???
by Jay C on Jan 14, 2009 06:37 PM

Oscars are meant for mainstream english movies....esp. made in US and UK.....its not a benchmark for "best movie", but best amongst english movies.

There are thousands of films released in other languages, and Oscars only categories all of them in one category - foreign films.....which is absolutely ridiculous and hence film makers should stop sending their nominations.

TZP is one of the great movies like Lagaan, and many others, so we should enjoy it here, and don't bother about Oscars.

How can we compare Apple with Orange
by vinnie on Jan 14, 2009 06:10 PM  | Hide replies

Whats point of sending Orange to the competition of Apple? Have you seen any Apple competing in competition of Oranges?

Indian movies are very different from Hollywood movies and hence they cannot be compared on same ground.

I also agree with other comments that Slumdog Millionaire type movies do better in west (especially in US) because there is significant ignorance about Indian developments in recent years and they cannot think of Indians having good life; it looks superficial to them.

Also marketing does play a big part in success. A R Rehman composed song for Yuvvraj however it was used in Slumdog and became eligible for Golden Globe. If that song remained in Yuvvraj then it would not have been even noticed.

Indian development ??? What is development for you? A small percentage of population now owning cars and flats?
Look outside when you travel. Most people in India (you might not even think of them as Indians) struggle for their day to day existence. We have a lawless society. We are far from developed.

But it definitely deserves more than just one watch!

I feel you are comparing TZP with other Bollywood films and thus saying it is Oscar worthy. No doubt TZP is a good film but it is nowhere nearby Hollywood classics.

They cant visualise that Indians can have upper class lifestyles and we also send our children to lovely boarding schools. We also have cars(not elephants) to travel and we have other employments apart from that of snakecharmers.

Yeah I agree with you arnab slumdog millionaire is a very average movie, after all it is just an adaptation of the novel Q & A. The oscars have become like the bollywood cinema. Only the films which are marketed well and which draws the media hype and hooplah get the big bucks, likewise the oscar selection committee pitches only for the film which are showcased well there and not the ones which are deserving of the awards. To be frank TZP is way ahead of Lagaan in every aspect.

Box office failure is a greater punishment than losing out the Oscars. Even if nominated, the chances of winning is quite slim. Let us enjoy Indian movies as well as Hollywood movies. We have best of both worlds. Our movies are hearty, their movies are brainy. Ours wholesome entertainment. A movie like Angoor or the original Golmaal or even Chupke Chupke bring many smiles even today.
