Why bollywood movies struggle to win at the Oscars?
by Super User on Jan 14, 2009 07:58 PM  | Hide replies

To win an Oscar the film must stand out or be different. Basically the director must take a lot of risks - with the story and direction.

Just an example - In recent times, how many movies have been made in Bollywood with a plot that has a suspense element to it? Perhaps none! ..and I dont consider Kaho naa pyaar hai as a movie with a good suspense plot...it was a one-dimensional plot. The reason being suspense plots are very difficult to make because the director has to keep the audience's interest in the movie until the end and also make sure that he does not reveal the plot.

If the viewer gets bored half-way through the movie, he walks away. If the viewer finds out what is going to happen then too he walks away. Imagine a movie like 'The Sixth Sense', the charm of the movie lies in the last few scenes and thats what made it a great movie.

Most bollywood directors dont take that risk, instead they unravel the suspense element 2/3 way into the movie and basically turn the last 60 minutes of the movie into a straight-forward cat and mouse race.

Im not saying suspense movies are the only way to win awards but I hope you understand what Im trying to say...

Also most stories lack a good plot and charcters lack depth. All in all not worth being labelled best foreign language film in the world. Perhpas Lagaan deserved it, Aamir Khan himself conceded that the movie that won deserved it more than Lagaan.

I dont understand wht made you stick to suspence element here? What kind of suspence you can expect in a movie like TZP?
The sixth sence was good but he also never made it for oscars. I think bollywood has came a really long way. Look at the movies that were made in 80s. Every year we have some movies which are in class in iteself and that speaks of the fact that things are changing. As per the Oscars are concerned, promotion is where our movies lag. Also the songs in the movies don't get too well with western audience. I don't care about them as we love songs :)

You didnt get my point... the suspense movie was just an example. The moot point is bollywood producers do not take big risks. They stick to tried and tsted formula. Why should formula movies be awarded? After all they have only copied th same used techniques.

A good example of a director taking risk is Clint Eastwood's Million Dollar Baby - a movie about a female boxer. Boxing movies will get the typical male crowd in who look for action but the movie is not a stereotyped action movie. Because it is based on boxing, it may put the female audiences away. He took th risk of narrating a brilliant sory of a female boxer and the relationship between the coach and the boxer. It required a very seasoned hand to make it work and Clint Eastwood (as director and actor) and Hillary Swank left audiences spell-bound. It deserved an Oscar and got 4!!

Now tell me the average bollywood movie producer/director (Yash Raj, Karan Johar etc.) who takes that level of risk? All they are interested is box office revenues. Even Clint Eastwood would have had to justify the spend but its a case of risk more on a product that you are confident about as opposed to Bollywood's low risk strategy and be happy with making it a hit with 1.2 billion Indians rather than make money by having the whole world watch it.

No kissing scenes, no nudity, no gay relationship, no fourletter word. A clean movie which the perverted west cant relate to.

Not a big deal

You have to understand the difference between Western and Indian perceptions. In rich countries where the average population is far well off than our counterparts in India, movies like Slumdog are novel because you don't see those extremes in places like the U.S. normally. In India movies cheer up the bulk of the masses who have a hard life and go to the movies to relax and have fun. TZP while novel in India has been a subject focussed on in many Western films. Finally the box office success matter more than awards because it raises funds to make better films in the end.

TZP loses Oscer but wins hearts

Doesn't really matter. TZP is winner.
The story, acting, screen play, direction doesn't get better than this. Hope other movies which topped the list are worth otherwise it will leave dirty smell of politics behind. Hope SRK is also not behind putting it down; I don't think so...

he is quite right. may be srk would be pressing to out the tzp from oskar. aamir has defeated him with sky touching collections of ghazini. because of ghazini, rab ne bana..... didn't attract people attention. if it would have been released much before ghazini, the become would be super hit. the reality is film is average hit.

TZP is a one of the finest movies made in India!

We love you Amir, Oscar is never given for 'feel good' movies....I am not sure if slumdog will win, well it might win...because it is about 'Indian slums'...westerners favorite theme

very rightly said.thewe westerers want to see slums of india and they wil nominate such movies. For E.G sALAAM BOMBAY.When they get to see real good stuff like TZP ,they cant digest it.any movie on war in bosnia, israel -palestine issue, they will nominate it and even give the award. But when it comes something like TZP ,they turn their heads away.Even BLACK could have won it,but i dont know what happen to our slelection committe that they sent PAHELI,an absolutely useless movie.though i am a hard core SRK fan,i would still say TZP deserved it.BLACK deserved it.

Very true . If the judges or nominators cannot relate based on their own experiences or perception then it is impossible for TZP to make it at the Oscars.
