Movies that americans like
by mirror on Jan 14, 2009 03:15 AM  | Hide replies

Look at the list of movies about Indians that Americans liked and have nominated:-

1:- Mother India
2:- Salaam Bombay.
3:- Lagaan
4:- Water
5:- Slumdog Millionaire

(6:- Bend It Like Bekham)

All these movies have 1 thing in common is that they all showed the poorer side of india and indians. The only movie that beats this list is :- Bend It Like Beckham which lost the Golden Globe for BEST MOTION PICTURE - MUSICAL OR COMEDY to another wonderful movie Finding Nemo. But BILB was about Indians living in UK and not in India otherwise it would have never been nominated. All that western world wants to see about india is poverty and misery. They seem to be fasinated by it and find it very beautiful !!

All these are about HOPE and truly powerful. I guess you would have preferred a Govinda movie showing us like nincompoops.

3 cheers to rahman,hiphiphurray!
by max on Jan 13, 2009 03:01 PM

Why only Danny for slumdog, one mr adiga , the likes of arundhati roy ,kiran desai ,u & me also can be heaped honours for portraying India distastefully. While there is no denying the poverty & filth that ruins India, these people mock upon them for definite western approval. Vilification not empathy of India's misery is these people's claim to fame!
but i congratulate rahman for good music and the resultant award ,congratulation!

the music of slumdog is definitely good especially the background score but i do feel rahman deserved to win for rang de basanti rather than slumdog millionaire..

The film got nominated because it is a foreign film.
Rang De Basante can only compete in the best foreign film category at Oscars whils slumdog can compete in all vcategories since it is english film made by Uk producers.

There are people who have achieved more important things and who make me feel proud to be an Indian. I don't have anything against the people in your list but you got to raise your standards in the bigger context. Btw, what has Murugadoss done except remaking a zillion versions of Ghajini?

Both of you should stop regionalizing. First person lists Tamil achievers, second person says there are greater things achieved by Indians. Both of you should stop. There are 'lesser' achievements by Indians all over the country. And as for greater achievements, those can be traced to Tamilians also. The first Indian ever to have won a Nobel prize in Physics was from TN. World-class chess player Vishwanathan Anand is from TN. And of course there are equally great achievers from other states. Bottom line is both of you should stop regionalizing!

A. R. Murugadoss is an acclaimed Tamil director in Kollywood, the Chennai–based Tamil film industry. He has done five films. He has directed top stars in Ajith Kumar, Vijaykanth, Surya, Chiranjeevi and Aamir Khan. His five films have been classified hits and Ghajini in Tamil especially received rave reviews for his style of directing. His latest venture is Ghajini in Hindi with Aamir Khan and Asin. The movie had a big opening and is breaking many records, it's a blockbuster. Its the first Bollywood movie to cross the 100 crore barrier in the collection category. It's said that SRK have requested him a good script for his next project.

DO you need more info on Murugadoss??

Darshana,
If you think I am regionalizing, then you are surely mistaken. My point was to simply say that there are people who have done more in real life both Tamil and the rest of India. Compared to them, I don't give much credit to these filmmakers who copy most of their stuff. Ramanujan and Anand make me more proud.

LA people,
Do you know that the Ghajini has been copied from Momento which was intelligent? Momento was copied from a Korean movie. So what is that that you are proud of here exactly? Proud that he could make a good copy?

I think we as Indians should be proud not as tamilians or punjabis....or wherever. Have you ever heard an American say Clint eastwood won because he is a Californian.....They always call themselves American first and in India we rationalize.

jeevan,
you don't need to mention names of successful Tamils to make your point!
Anal Kapoora's behaviour at the golden globe awards makes a good point about the stark difference between the two ends of India!!

Did anybody else find Anal Kapoora's behaviour at the presentation ceremony embarassing?

I found his behaviour very cheap and pathetic! He stood up and started clapping like he had won some award when his name was mentioned by the film's director!

Why do punjabi people behave like this? Do they have to go and embarrass their countrymen like this in front of the whole world!

Most punjabi people are well-to-do and don't need to show the world that they are important but no matter how much they have achieved in their lives, they behave like roadside romeos and act like fools to get the limelight on themselves!!

There is no law against showing your true feelings.......you would rather we be like the restrained westerners who would think twice before even smiling...and then we the same people would call them arrogant.

Anal Kapoora was dancing like a baffoon when his name was mentioned! And he was the first to tailgate and follow the producer to the stage when the "Best Movie" award was announced. Thank God that he didn't do his monkey dance on-stage. (Anal Kapoora was a shame to all Indians. I wouldn't generalize this behavior to Punjabis).

and GO RAHMAN!!! You made us (Indians and Tamils) proud. Wish you the best for winning the Academy Awars.
