Frieda did what she was supposed to do for her role.If the whole world is gaga over her for that, wat is your problem ?? And there is no reason ,that i see, why you should compare her to some lame actress from a lame bollywood movie. Its just called, being unfair.
Moreover, thats how the stoy in the book Q and A was written, as a work of fiction, not as if it was based on the a real life story. The author is an indian and the movie doesnot have originl but an adapted screen play. So whom are u trying to blame, a fellow indian, u dumbo !!!
And sir, all the great directors that you named, their movies were pitted in the foriegn film catagory. Its a pity that they could not compete and win against chinese, japanese or french or the rest of the worldmovies for that matter.
First of all, u try to make some sense and then you can try to imbibe some self respect in yourself. The movie is a british movie, and no one apart from you seems to care that a british movie got an oscar.

A fact -show india as they want to believe and see it. Win!
by C Kr on Feb 25, 2009 01:46 PM  | Hide replies

But show a movie about India's economic growth, urbane crowd, a story about wealthy, educated youngsters that are successful (also a reality in india) - No One will acclaim it at the academy, nor in the western audience.

They will applaud only what they want to see. they want to see india's rotten underbelly (also a reality). India is in charge of slums and poverty to them, not glitz and tech - some other countries own that.

What do you want to show to them.. Dil Chahta hai... they have 100s of their own DCH... but they have not seen something like Slumdog Millionare... and above all... its tight script and engrossing movie. So get a life.... why do you care so much about what they like and what they dont?
And in anycase... Slumdog Millionare is british/hollywood movie telling Indian story. Its NOT an Indian movie...it was produced, directed and distributed by Hollywood. why do you care so much?

Oscar Awards
by indira on Feb 25, 2009 11:22 AM

All the media went ga ga over the runaway success of the film at the oscars. What they have not understood was that the film got so many awards because it was directed and produced by westerners though it was set in Indian backdrop. I doubt whether it would have so many awards had it been produced and directed by an Indian. As for ARR , though I am a great fan of him , I don't think this is his best. He had more superior works to his credit.
Our media never gives such wide coverage for our national awards. I don't understand why do we alaways want accolades form the west for whatever we do. Even ARR ( The Hindu) has told that, Anjelina Jolie, Spielberg and Penelope Cruz congratulated him and treated him as their equal. Why should he have this comlex? He is much more talented. Unless we believe that, we are second to none, ae will always have this sort of complex.

Don't understand ...
by kuldeep verma on Feb 25, 2009 11:05 AM

Among all this hype and hoopla i haven't been able to understand why Saurabh Shukla(the police constable) wasn't credited at the end of the movie. Why he wasn't seen in any award functions related to the movie , because he is as good or better actor than most of the actors in the movie.

Lucky Slumdog
by Brijesh on Feb 25, 2009 01:21 AM  | Hide replies

Well no doubt the Movie was good.....but come on now, was it that good to earn an Oscar ? I doubt on that. Who says Anil kapoor or Irfan khan or A R Rahman was at his best. Anil Kapoor was normal as in any other Movie. Irfan Khan had not even had enough role inthe movie to prove his real talent. A R Rahaman has score much..much and much better music for lot of other Indian films...this was definately not his best.

The movie one Oscar is a different story, but don't tell me all the talent inthe movie did an extraordinary job..... For me the story was unique and compeling hence the movie looked good....but still doubt if it was any better than Lagan which did not won a single award.

Pleas share you comments on this.

have been reading a lot on this, have not seen the movie. am confused. looks like a)the movie is good, but we have better movies, b)india's underbelly is a reality but why should we make an exhibition of it c) firangs make good movies but they have this obsession for Indian poverty, and d)it won oscars only coz it exposed the dirty, slimy, grimy, corrupt India.
all of this is true - in parts.
The western morbid obsession with Indian poverty comes out of an inner insecurity about this giant civilisation which is slowly waking up and will walk all over them one day. mebbe this is the beginning of the awakening. may be this movie will open the eyes of our own bollywod, which although makes good movies, still does have a lot of over the top melodrama stuff.

The quality of movies that were made or released last year were not great as what it used to be like earlier. Even the movies that were selected in the panel were not great. So this movie was the better compared to the others. That is the reason for SDM winning so many awards. The recession has made a big impact on the movie production too.
