Good to see people being so proud of their culture and language...I am not tamil, but I can understand the sentiments. Each one of us must be proud of our roots in India, our regional identity goes along with our nationality....we are rooted to our locality, our city, our state, our language, our culture, our religion, our region which in totality makes us proud to be an Indian!
So, stop abusing here..

Jai Hind!

Nonsense...
by Ravi on Feb 26, 2009 05:12 AM  | Hide replies

Going by sheer common sense, whats the point in talking in a language when the audience can't understand what you are talking about? For me this headlines is utter crap. But then hypocrisy is ignored in the name of national pride. So no more comments.

Ofcourse he made us Tamils Proud, In turn making the entire india proud. We will be and are in Cloud TEN as you said.
As some one rightly said, one should never forget his roots and mother tongue. Mother tongue is like your mother. even though you love all, love to your mother will be special and inturn, that mothers happiness would be special. That is what you are seeing here.

So try to understand and enjoy the moment.

Ofcourse He made us Tamilians Proud.

As some one rightly said, you should never forget your roots and your mother tongue. You moght love all, but still love to your mother is special and such is towards your mother tongue. In turn your mothers love to you can't be compared or matched, such is love to you from your mother tongue.

Try to understand this and this will look great to you.

We tamilians feel in cloud Nine as a fellow tamilian/indian has got an oscar.

Nonsense....Many Muslims have congratulated abhinav, vijender and our brave soldiers...
And lets remember, most people in our country are more bothered about Films and music. That is why,the congratulation is more for Rahman. It has nothing to do with religion.....

new race-based slur
by rt on Feb 25, 2009 07:22 AM  | Hide replies

slumdog is the new race/ethnicity-based slur that many have started calling kids of south-asian origin. it's a shame that indians are raving this crap of a movie. i understand why westerners do it- it reinforces their stereotypical view of india- but the way indians are jumping is classless and crass. even from the story perspective there's nothing genius about it- it only strings together contrived cliches about india. slumdog has tarnished india's image for many many years to comes. it will also bolster more fundraising by christian missionaries in the name of extreme poverty in india and that money will be misused towards forced conversions that exploits that very poverty. oh! how i wish francois gautier wrote on western hypocrisy a lot more. the way west has lapped up this movie shows exactly that mindset.

What do you want rt? In this information age you want the fact of the existence of such slums to be supressed? It is impossible. Even internal issues in countries like China, Russia and North Korea are coming in to open now. There's no way you can hide the truth anymore. But you could always improve the living conditions of these people which would save them from misery and also avoid media's eyes. Till then it's gonna keep coming out as news story you cant stop it.

And why in the world are you talking about Christian missionaries? Do you think all westeners are Christians? or that all Christians align up with the west? Christianity and western world are two totally different things. Christianity is not a western religion.

You need to educate yourself on the facts and open up to broaden your views.

Feel very shameof what u have written...people like u are the one who encourages religious conflicts and revolts in India... and because people like you India can never live in harmony! I agree that India is not full of slums, but ther are still lots of people living in slums and who are struggling for daily food ! If you are an Indian, you tell what u have done for these people ???????? but u are there to criticise the missionaries who are trying to do some help for these people. people like u are really a shame and curse for India !

Simran, dont give me so much importance that my comments could cause riots in india! second, my list of work is way longer than you can imagine. for starters,i have been working with street kids since i was myself 15 years old. i organize everything from local clean ups to volunteering time to educate kids. if i cant share money, i devote time. if i have extra money, i share that. but no i dont condition my work with religious conversion- something that christian missionaries do- read some of francois gautier's work. BUT it's NOT about me.
a) It's about south-asian kids who have to now put up with another racial-abuse term.
b) US media has been showing all the shitty-slums (their phrase) of india for the whole week now- on news & entertainment programs. and during these programs there are ads by christian missionaries to donate money for third world countries.
c) so yes, film has benefitted conversion agenda, but not sure how it can change india from within. you cant abuse a country and expect it to change; just like you cant just call people poor, pitiable folks & expect them to change! btw, bill maher just called india a shit-hole and generated a generous laugh!
d) yes, slums are reality and we indians know it, own it, and many of us do a lot of work, but what's baffling is why only this view of india sells in the west?
e) from your comment about my comment causing revolts & conflicts, clearly you lack the basic intellect to understand or hold a logical discourse.

Keep up ur good works !
but why u worry so much about whatever USMedia is projecting about india?????? let them do what they want... why we should be bothered !!!!!!!!
as far as chistian missionaries concerned, what do u really know about the real sacrifice they r making to help the poor people? where as u r spending what ever extra time u have for the poor, they are spending their whole life for them ! do u realise that? and for ur kind knowledge there are no forcible religious conversion, but sure they will preach about their religion....... again if u have so much problem with chistian missionaries ...........other religion missionaries are also most welcome !
anyways i think it is time to feel proud of whatever achievement india has made ! be happy n enjooy :-)

Simran, i hate to bang my head against a wall, but let me try to get through to you again. when you say that missionaries spend their lifetime doing charity work, it's their job! i will do my job as long as i can! the issue is that of exploiting poverty and misery around the world to propagate the number game. starting from the crusades to forced conversions today, it is violent and economic exploitation. if you think there are no forced conversions, try to go and tour some of the areas- not just tribal and rural, but also urban sectors. you are ranting for the past two days without any factual information. second, its not about how US media projects india- though it is a concerns for those living in US and you may be oblivious to their existence, im not- but the big picture is that of US media exploiting indian image to extend missionary charities, that clearly have a conversion agenda. and you still havent answered what you do for your local area? neighborhood? still trying to think of stuff to list here! so is it only the irrational rabid diatribe that comes naturally to you? as i said earlier, grow up and get a perspective. go explore the real world yourself- not just through internet!

Sunny Kashyap, the comment doesnt say that we shouldnt be proud of rahman. it's another thing that i personally dont think that its his best. the only reason that it made it to the west is because of the package. good for him though. but the issue that i've pointed to in the intial post is altogether different one.
