by Guest on Apr 02, 2009 10:28 PM

Slumdog Millionaire is the Oscar favorite this year. When made the makers did not expect it to become so successful. It started small but gradually got the attention of movie critics all over the world. Here are some interesting facts about the movie.
* Slumdog Millionaire is adopted from a novel titled novel “Q & A.” It was the first novel of Vikas Swarup.
* Interestingly, Slumdog Millionaire dealt with India and Indian people but only 20% of the movie dialogues are in Hindi.
* Famous Indian actor, Amitabh Bachchan, did a cameo in the movie. He gives autograph to young Jamal (Ayush Mahesh Khedekar). In real life, Amitabh Bachchan is one of the most successful actors in the history of Hindi cinema and the real host of “Kaun Banega Crorepati,” the Hindi version of “Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?” He used to host the show in 2000 and 2001. The show was very successful and salvaged Amitabh Bachchan’s career.
* Even after Oscar, the magic of Slumdog Millionaire has not withered away. The movie gave a major boost to tourism industry in India especially in Mumbai slums.
* “Jai Ho” one of the several soundtracks that plays in the end of Slumdog Millionaire is composed by famous Indian music composer, A.R. Rahman. He won Oscar in the best original song category. Now, Indian Congress Party bought music rights of the song for about nearly $200,000 they want to use the song in their campaigns for the upcoming general elec

Future of Indias film indutry is in shifting to English
by NamoUdupiSrikrishna on Feb 24, 2009 05:10 PM  | Hide replies

Future of Indias film indutry is in shifting to English, to be global in nature.

Indian professionals, scietists and thinkers have succeeded asnd recognised when they started doing their bwork and expressing their talent in a globally recognised language, that is english. Indian film industry has to come out of the its over dependence of hindi and regional languages and has to shift to English to be global, for more exposure, for survival and to show case its originality, before outsiders export their products for our large englsh enabled audience. English is the language which has won the battle of dominance in world and when we adopt it we too are part of that. Otherwise bollywood will face the fate of Spanish, French, German or rabic language movies. English is the common language for Indians and it is foreighn language to every Indian, love it, marry it, reproduce it and make it your own to succeed.

English is the global medium of communication for the new millenium. make it yours, Bollywood, then surive and succeed. Make Indiam movies with Indian stories, Indian stars, Indian settings, Indian songs, Indian technology in Indian English. This is the way to go, get recognised and to success.

Jai Hind,

Germans, French, etc. watch Hollywood products dubbed into their own language. There is no reason why Bollywood cannot produce versions dubbed for international markets!

how 'slumdog' word is justified?
by Saugata Banerjee on Feb 24, 2009 04:37 PM

i had a very strict objection on name ‘slumdog’ which is being tried to justified as underdog! then why in this film again and again jamal was called by the police inspector as ‘mr. dog’ or simply as ‘dog’? because it’s hidden intention of boyle like western to give Indian a new name –‘slumdog’! it’s new world, then how directly dog can be called!
earlier this britisher used to call us ‘dog’ and sign board they used to keep ‘ dogs & Indians r not allowed’! ‘slumdog’ is not a dictionary word! u can not create a word like this! then who is underdog in office, he can be called ‘office dog’! who is underdog in a locality, he can be called as ‘localitydog’!

u travel by bus and u like custard, then ur friends r calling u sounds like ‘bastard’! is it o.k.? when u object if they explain that we called u ‘bustard’ what means ‘ a large land bird that can run very fast’ as u r traveling very fast , we were just comparing!
will u be satisfied? shud u not stop them from calling u such? !!!!

Imagine if 'Gandhi'' would have been made in Bollywood
by Prasad on Feb 24, 2009 04:11 PM  | Hide replies

Had the film 'Gandhi' been made in Bollywood, just imagine what a piece of joke it would have been. The plot would progress somthing like this:

Scene-1 : Gandhi is born. The whole village erupts in joy. Distribution of sweeets, dancing on the streets. Astrologer predicts the newborn would one day become one of the greatest living souls.

Scene-II: Gandhi weds Kasturba; the whole village is dressed in bright coluors; Garbha dances and songs by Gandhi and Kasturba.

Scene-III: Gandhi goes to SA. Pushed out of the train by a Gora; song depicting injustice; people gather around Gandhi; wow is taken to fight injustice; can see many Muslims among the victims.

Scene-IV: Gandhi sets of on Dandi March; a patriotic song (probably Kadam Kadam Badhayeja); lots od jai jaikars for Gandhiji.

Scene-V: Jalianwalbagh tragedy; another tragic song in Urdu sung by Gandhi; another resolution to fight injustice by the Gora log

Scene-VI: On the eve of independence Jinnah and Hindu extremsits start Hindu-Muslim riots; Gandhi pacifies crowd; many Muslims decide to stay back in India rather than go to Pakistan

SceneVII: India gets freedom; Gandhi hoists national flag amidst singing of Vande Mataram;

Scene VIII: Gandhi killed by Hindu extremist; a rousing speech by Nehru promising strict action against the perpetrators of this heinous crime; another sad song in Urdu to evoke pathos.
-------------- The end----------------

Poverty is a reality
by Amitabh Akolkar on Feb 24, 2009 04:07 PM

Poverty and slums are a reality of India.
But why the west only celebrates the reality about the poverty in India. I'm sure there are other films made in India which showed reality about other things including politics.
Why is it that only Indian poverty makes the west feel good?
The movie is full of Indian stereotypes in the west - slums, poverty, crime, corruption, elephant, people traveling on train top, Tajmahal, toursits being conned and yes new stereo type - call center!
