Try turning it around...
by Dr.Prakash on Feb 23, 2009 08:29 PM  | Hide replies

The main reason for hue and cry is twofold.

1.If the same film had Indian names as directors/producers it would have been booted back home. Now it wins awards under the guise of 'charitable acts' to an impoversihed 3rd world country
Let India's biggest names and actors make a movie about lives messed up by Hurricane Katrina or the life of the homeless in the US ...it just won't sell...don't even worry about thinking of awards..

2. A movie about an ill IS AN ILL or a movie about exploitation is REFINED EXPLOITATION unless a major chunk of the money earned is VISIBLY used to better the ill/exploitation

Lets wait and watch....nothing is going to change ...like life 3 weeks after any terror/horror story...or I am lucky to be wrong this time...

Dr.Prakash

Prakash, you said the right things!...Even Obama addressing to US nationals, he says that they have lot more packages for middle class and they never used the poor, Even though there are lot more below the poverty line...i have seen them.

We allow BBC to make study and showcase as a programme to the world that indians earn less than 1$/day.

Understand them!..understand ours!

don't compare yourself with USA. India is not able to help USA. What ever happenes in USA is exposed to the whole world through statistics, while desi counries hide, crimes , social evils etc etc. No wonder Indians are crying about poverty shown in the movie. Why don't hindus also start wearing burqa just like mullahs do.
What jealousy? what progress?
Everyone is stuck on poverty shown in slum dog but no one has any idea that the movie was based on Child labor, child molestation, physical abuse, sale of under age girls, rape, abuse of public in the hands of gov officers etc. India have no idea that all the above crimes are considered crimes in the west and are look down upon n the west. Is that what idnia progress is?
Secondly,India does look like a slum for people living in the west. You might think that marine drive and pali hill are very rich looking but they are not to people who lived in the west all their life.

Lot more changed...Now India is not slum for the US....It is nation for importing people to US...2025..40% of indians will be distributed across all part of the world.

They are concept conceivers...We are executors. The shift from Execution to concept conceive has to come within us. Hopefully lot more indian companies will be in forture 500 list. Be optimistic, when speaking to Americans. DOnt behave like slums

Dr Prakash.. First thing first: India's biggest names and actors are simply not good enough (either mentally or technically) to make a movie in a class of Slumdog. Even if they do, they wont be booted back home simply because they have tried to show more poverty, more police brutality, more corruption in some of the recent movies but fell well short of making a masterpiece. eg. Traffic signal.
Secondly, this movie is anything but about exploitation. If you see this in That light, its because of your own inferiority complex (Is that the reason you have to make sure that everyone knows you are some kind of DOCTOR) which filters out the truth and make you feel that whole world is conspiring against you. Grow up, shake off the old school scales and see the world in the new light.

by anup nair on Feb 23, 2009 07:31 PM

I'm not proud of winning an Oscar for Slumdog, but disappointed that such a bad movie was nominated & won Oscars. Truly a bad portrayal of India, & again proving that we r good at pleasing others at any cost. In a nutshell this movie is worth a 1000 brickbats. jai hooooooooooooo

by sameer lakhmani on Feb 23, 2009 07:15 PM

What Slumdog has shown about India is true..and Instead of Clapping and Praising Movie..one should stop child labour ,Education for every indian,Protection for every one,n even foreigners ,stop exploiting children..This movie has shown some great problems in india .Even Sonia Ghandhi n Prime Minister Praising the movie but not interested in Problems of Slums Of India

I was fervently hoping this movie shouldn't win any Oscar except for the music score ( well, a master musician has to be recognized some time at least !) only because as you rightly said, "It was not necessary to rake up the dirt in India to create a film to bring Oscars to India"..Any self-respecting Indian should not pride himself that such a film that portrays India in the worst possible way should be held on the Oscar pedestal for all the world to see and * assume * ( which it rightly will!) that all of India is always like that...At a time when India is making giant strides on the IT frontier, is this what we need to identify India as?? I feel ashamed that such a film has been made on India and that people are beaming about it winning the Oscars...All the hype and awards sorrounding this seems like a world-wide conspiracy to push on to the limelight an unfortunate section of the Indian society and try convince the world that this is what India is all about....Indians, can you not see the smirk and snigger behind it all? Please, when will you wake up? I feel sorry that every Indian in the West is going to feel the unmouthed words about his motherland and wished such a film hadn't been made.....

My friend, the first of all, you are the first person to wake up. India has been a free country for the last 60 yrs or so. Its time to shed the slave mentality. Its time to wake up to the reality that the economic and IT boom you are talking about is due to the same people (foreigners) that you are bashing. Get rid of your "Look at me, Look at me, I am so good" euphoria and accept the reality. And the reality is that "Unfortunate section of the society" you talked about makes up 80% of Indian population. Stop watching Amir Khan, SRK, Yashraj, Karan Johar crap (movies) and appreciate the true cinema for once. Your problem with this movie is that it was produced and directed by a foreigner. The real shame here is the fact that when a foreigner can make such a film about India, why can't our own Bollywood people do the same. And moreover, untitl you have watched movies like Pursuit of Happiness, Shawshank Redemption, American Gangster etc, you would never understand that Slumdog is not about a White Conspiracy against indian progress, its cinema at its best and a masterpiece in true sense. And yes, instead of feeling ashamed about what foreigners think about the motherland, do something to alleviate the very cause that make you feel uncomfortable accepting the truth about slums, police brutality, child labor and many more evils we have in our society. Accepting the truth is the first positive step.. Do it now !!!

Accepting the truth is the first positive step. Agreed!..

US has not made us to grow in IT. We made them to grow and inturn we grown. They get $2 in-return after our expense,if they outsource to india, when it was costing $4 in US.

India is having a foreign reserves of $250 billion, why can't it be spent to reduce it or eliminate it. We have people constructing a sky rocket posh building for billions of dollar to name it as the world's costliest house.

Everyone has to take steps on their own to eliminate or clear their mess. It depends how intelligent and how fast you are in eliminating it.

why ????
by anurag pandey on Feb 23, 2009 12:24 PM

Why there is so much noise about slumdog..because it was made by some british director and won oscar..if u are talking about slum, police torture..tell me one hindi film around that theme didn't show that..dharavi, satya, Ghayal..and many more ..in every movie there is police torture, slums..so why there is so criticism....and also that movie made by one british director and getting some foreign award..the movie is not getting some national award...so if u don't agree with the director..don't see the picture..period.

Harry Ji,

If you are so against a Britisher (Angrez, Gora whatever u call) making Slumdog and winning American award, then do the right thing by discarding everything that even remotely connects YOU to THEM.. How about Changing your name from HARRY (I never heard of an Indian name called HARRY and that too with Anand) to HARISH or whatever your real name is.. And Then we can talk about whatever objections you may have about the movie. And I am sure, you havent even watched the movie yet.

I'm sure you would find a few "how dare they insult us?" types, but actually I think many people here in Britain would rather welcome some outsider commentary on our society. I certainly would. You can start with our horrible racist British National Party, then move on to young knife gangs in south London - and it would be even more useful if you could find something hideous that we have got so used to seeing that we don't even notice it any more.

Slumdog Millionare is a over hyped movie. It seriously does not deserve the attention that it is getting. The acting is poor and there are much better movies out there. The story is stupid as a guy who loved his brother dearly at the end of the movie doesnt even care when his brother shoots himself dead. In fact he starts dancing. LMFAO
