It is as if A.R. was not talented before this. Personally, i feel SDM is not among AR's best works. I just can't compare this album with Dilse, Roja, Bombay, Vandemataram, Duet or even 1947 Earth. According to me, this recognition is just because the movie was directed by a westerner and the production house is from U.S. All i can say is that this is not the recognition of the first good work of A.R, it is just the first recognition of good and great works that A.R. has been doing. We need to understand that there are lot of other talented Indians, and western recognition doesn't alone make himself/herself talented.

you are right mate! The music is below par!

We can win oscars..gg's...grammy's if we are part of westerner's project.

No doubt that Rahman is genius!
But I think Slumdog Millioner's music is not as great as its making waves around the world. All Rahman's fans know that this is very mediocre stuff from him, and even Rahman would have been laughing somewhere inside in his heart.
But life is very strange, sometime you dont get even small recognition for your best work, and sometime u get Oscar for average work.
But as as Indian I'm proud of his achivement.

For us Indians his other works are better because we have a sense of music which is unique to our part of the world. If he has given Delhi 6 songs to SM, more chances that western audience would not have liked as it would have been too alien for them to digest. For SM, Rahman has managed to create music suiting their tastes with Indian sounds, a true mark of genius.

Amit bhai, you are right..it is sad but true that some of ARR's good works in "Bose..", "Water","Meenaxi","Rang De Basanti" or say "Delhi 6" have not caught the attention of The Academy. SM is not a bad movie, but a mediocre one definitely, and ARR's music complements the story. Wish Rahman's true gems get noticed internationally someday.

Yes ARR is genius he knows how to market his music. Thanks to media he and the film received this kind of hype.

Go and see the film "NAAN KADAVUL". Then you will know the meaning of music. Thanks to Ilayaraja.

Ilayaraja is the god of music

Raaja Sir is beyond....oscars...gg's...grammys..etc.

If Raaja Sir is offered an award it would be like offering a MP seat to GOD.

ARR is the heir apparent of Raaja...and is leading the Indian music by example

Rahman never calls himself a tamilian although he is one. He dedicated his GG award to India. Think big.
Nehru said this after he got elected from Allahabad. " Just because I got elected from Allahabad, it doesn't mean I will work only for them. I belong to the whole of India."
Think great. Nobody calls Abdul Kalam as a Tamilian. He is always 200% Indian whose mother tongue happens to be Tamil.

Verses in Carnatic music is in Telugu but, most of the exponents of Carnatic music are Tamils. Therefore, music has no language boundary.

Dear Moderator, what this is angle of bringing "Tamilians" in between?

Does this have a relevance? Does Music has a language? Do actors need a language to evoke emotion in you?

I fail to understand when will people grow up and start referring to ourselves as "Fellow Indians" first.

I feel so sorry for you...
