Hats off to Aamir for creating a masterpiece in celluloid. Going back in the history of Bollywood, it is rare to find a film with such a palatable mix of entertainment and art. The cinematography, the subtle but strong dialogue delivery, the little genius in the form of Darsheel and most of all the content that is fraught with meaning and relevance in the context of today's mechanical world of a child being pushed to the limits for success. I think the film should be awarded the Oscar just because of the great message it delivers.
TZP was a well-rounded film that worked in the realm of Bollywood. I thought it had great commercial value, great music and an above-average (albeit predictable) storyline. Having said all that, however, I honestly don't think it is worthy of an Oscar.
"A Wednesday", on the other hand, would have been my pick. Everthing from the finesse of Shah's acting, the vulnerabliity of Kher's character to the twists in the plot deserves applause. The screenplay was as complex as the name of the movie was simple. This movie would have definetly dispelled some of the "WEstern" conceptions of viewing Bollywood films to be nothing more than song-and-dance sequences.
But that's another story altogether and all I can say is " All the best Nikumbh Sir".

i dont know if it will be in the top 5 or not but i seriously think ht an indian cinema which sent for the oscars shud have the identity of indian cinema i.e. the 2 hour plus length and the songs as well. coz i think tht the hollywood will not give an oscar to an indian cinema if 1) it has all the ingredients of a hollywood movie and 2) if it is a copy or an inspired version frm the hollywood movies. we shud send movies tht are in the hollywood format in the first place coz we cant beg to win an oscar just to show the world tht we won an oscar. the movie shud reflect indian culture and shud be in indian format. as for TZP, i think tht it has all ingredients of an indian cinema. it the best choice this year. best of luck to TZP team.

I took some time for me to understand what you were trying to say but I thought it was quite an interesting take on my post Subhash.
In your post you say that Indian cinema (consider the last two words bolded) sent to the Oscars should have the works i.e. the song and dance sequences and the long lengths. But I think you are making a generalization there. What you are reffering to is Bollywood cinema and not Indian cinema.
I can see where you are coming from in the whole Oscar part. I'm not sure I agree with it but it is your opinion.
Lastly, all of the movies that were contenders for the Oscars might not have conformed to the formula of Bollywood but they did all reflect some aspect of Indian culture.
Why not choose the film that won the National Award to be be India's entry for Oscars? If the film is good enough to win the top Indian award, it should be good enough to go to the Oscars too. After all, the selection process for the National Award can also suffice for the Oscars. Why have a different selection?
TZP is a very good movie and has the potential to win an Oscar award. We can see that in this movie we have lot of tings that people need to learn, not only Indians but everyone who expect his children to excel in the field they want. What i feel is, if TZP can't win an Oscar then it is very difficult for any Indian movie to win an Oscar. TZP has everything that is needed for an Oscar in it. Good luck Aamir and thanks for giving us such a good movie.

Looks like ur seeing this kind of theme for the first time. Ther is such a thing called documentaries tht showcases child disorders, and its quite long bt not as long as a hindi movie w.the songs, drama n all tht.
Try to catch those stuff earlier in child development classes at high school and thn in college, TZP is nothing new in comparison to tht.
Bt since bollywood is one way tht people will get influenced by these issues, so TZP has done tht in a good way.
TZP is a good movie but I dont think it will win an oscar. As long as we select the commercial hits we will never win an oscar. The films should be selected only based on its potential to win an oscar irrespective of the language or hero or technical finesse. The biggest joke to me was selecting Paheli for oscar. I always wondered what the jury might have been thinking when they saw Paheli.
