I agree with the fac that the first two are among the top 10 films ever made, but, raja, the 3rd 'misunderstood?'. That's euphemism for bullshit. The third one brought down the whole thing
I would still rate the book as better. In my school days, this was the first novel I read after having gone through Hardy Boys, Enid Blyton, Chase, etc. This is a novel which has never left me. In fact when I watched the movie, I was kind of neutral. It was the book which beat the movie in my mind. The way the characters are sketched in the mnovel was great. The character of Sonny, for instance had so many nuances which the movie skipped over. Similarly there were many instances. While, this is a brilliant movie, it still doesn't stack up to the novel.

Defintely agree that a movie rarely come up to the level of the original book. I probably liked "The Green Mile" the best of all movies based on books. I guess it all depends on how you or me imagine the scenes to be when we read the book, I found a close match in Green Mile

That's a very pretentious thing to say. For one to really appreciate cinema, you need to go into film theory and understand every aspect of film.
Literature and film are two very different forms of art.

Well said...
Lovers of literature would always rank books better as it opens the doors of the imagination of the reader. This is some thing film afficionados would never understand as they are led by the nose by someone else's imagination and sadly fall short in their own imagination.
However, I would say one thing. Coppola & Puzo came very close to match up to my imagination of the scenes, situations & locales.

same is the case with all other movies based on great novels, like lord of the ring, da vince code, etc,. in my view it is impossible to make a movie better than the novel.

You can't say that... considering that the Novel itself would not fall into the category of high literature...It is just a fiction...but the movie is an alltime classic...
