Wonderful article. Brings back the good old memories. I only wish that Doordarshan releases the old serials on DVD. I am sure there will be people lining up to buy them

you can get dvd of yeh jo hai jindagi.. dont know about others.. but u can watch them in parts on youtube..
Full of intrigues, vengence, schemes, rundowns, and so many more adjectives that can be used, and even those that started out well fell into the same gutter. Although I am a cable user, and my cable company has only two channels, the programs are almost identical. I don't need to watch them any more. If I want to follow up a story, Youtube is there and I can run through without the commercials, and fast forward any rubbish on the way. That is about it, and when these Channels relay their programs which are over a month in delay, who cares what is being shown. I am thinking of stopping these channels and save myself some $25 a month, which is a lot considering that I am retiree with a limited income.
Television has been oversaturated and diluted due to 100s of channels most of whom (if not all) use all kinds of tempting tactics to get viewership. There is overemphasis on sexual tones, materialism and negative values whereas ethics,morality,.. and other positive things are shown as outdated things with no significance which is infact not true in real life. Also ambitious people like ekta kapoor are encouraged on foregin owned networks like star plus to show for ex. wife doing 3 marraiges,.... and all such uncultured things in a manner as if this is ok in real life with no ill effects.
Currently i guess people are becoming tired of such things and there is an unspoken demand for a channel with no vulgarity, which is family friendly, puts emphasis on indian cultural values and is still acceptable in todays time instead of channels showing hollow and long term wise harmful foreign culture.
How about "himalay ki godh mein" and "Aisa bhi hota hain" - take off on ripley's believe it or not which had the fiesty anchor (forgetting her name) and "campus". Funny how we can recall such detail's like the jingle of khandaan even now after 20 years while i am sure no one can recall any thing that transpired in television 2 years ago. Overloading our senses leads to reduced memory and recall.

How could missed out on "Choti Choti Batein" with Ashok Saraf at his best dispelling the usual superstitions and that fiery lady Priya Tendulkar playing "Rajni". "Ek Kahani", "Darpan", "Kabhi Door Kabhi Paas" are a few others and then there was this brilliant serial by the great Satyajit Ray...can't recollect it's name now. Those were the golden days b'cas everything was in limits and so everyone even enjoyed "Chayageet" but not anymore. Excess of anything is bad.

the anchor on "aisa bhi hota hai" was really fiesty. You got the perfect word mate! I was pretty young then and she was like my first crush :) DJ

the anchor on "aisa bhi hota hai"..............She is/was MONIKA LAL. Even though the serial itself was interesting, but she was a big reason to sit through the serial.......and lots of curses for the "bijli board", if there was a power failure during the serial...

not to mention the smutty movies we watched clandestinely on friday nights without our parents knowing. also the world this week with prannoy roy was amazing.
Why complain? Rediff encourages and even praises mediocrity. In fact we get brand new titillating headliners like "who is the sexiest in a bikini" "whose got the sexiest body" etc, etc, every day.
