well said Raja Sen. Midnight's Children is not just any novel. Its a masterpiece which deserves a better treatment than Ms Mehta.

As complex as midmight's children.

Many says its a very nice book. When i started reading it I had to put it away after two paragraphs. Same happened today when I started reading this article.

Do writers really need to be this obscure if when they have many ways to explain simple things?

True Say Raja!

The novel's epic and whimsical with a capital W. And Mehta, given her filmography seems like a film-maker with diminishing returns. Let's see how mad she's about this, how good's her imagination and how this gets interpreted on screen. You've quoted Atonement and Kubrick's adaptations, but there are stinkbombs in recent cinema history like Captain Correlli madeliene and probably most supportive of your argument-Love in The Time of Cholera which prove Whimsy doesn't translate well on screen, and literality bogs and ruins it all beyond measure. Sigh!

Nice piece of writing, very articulate as usual

Very difficult to portray on film !
by devi raturi on Nov 14, 2008 11:27 AM

I agree that it is very difficult to make a film out of the masterpiece called "Midnight's Children"...the journey of Saleem is too complicated and i doubt if a film would be able to depict what SIR had been able to say through the novel...it would be more difficut for Sir Rushdie to write the screenplay that writing the novel...

Mr Frustrated.
by phamitus on Nov 14, 2008 11:24 AM

As RGV's blog has revealed, Mr Raja Sen is a aspiring director all producers are running away from! So he is frustrated. Why the heck does he care if Deepa Mehta (or anyone else for that matter) has got the rights for making a movie based on Midnights Children?
