good effort
by sanjoy alexander on May 16, 2008 07:47 PM

the double team of chan and lee do pull off a spectacle in The forbidden kingdom...the movie seems to have got alamost everything right...production values, martial arts, excellent leads - but it couldn't make a mark in the box-office for reasons unknown...the interest in the genre seems to be dropping and that can probably be the only explanation for its debacle

Two Kinds of Reviews
by Chris on May 04, 2008 02:37 PM  | Hide replies

One kind of review is the Raja Sen kind with a sort of intellectual bias. The reviewer sees a movie with a critical eye and comments on all negative aspects that inhabit his mind. No doubt such people have favourites and prejudices, for instance Raja Sen has his liking for Shahrukh Khan. The other kind is the reviewer who sees it from a common person's perspective. All that comes on these posts either praising or criticising the reviewer stems from a failure to understand the reviewer's perspective. For me at least reading Raja Sen's review helps me understand which movies not to watch viz. those he praises, with very few exceptions! Readers can make up their minds based on their inclinations, intellectual or otherwise. For most of us, movies are seen through an emotional prism rather than an intellectual one. Raja Sen writes well and deserves to be praised for his language. Enjoy his language if not his review.

I couldn't disagree more. Raja Sen has this rare talent of calling a spade a spade without making much fuss about it. His reviews are being missed, some sheer pieces of art.

Do you see the 3 Stars marked in the "Red" and an explanation after the article?

If you still can't see it, please visit the nearest eye clinic.

The review means: The movie is "Quite Good"

Nice Review
by Joy Das on May 03, 2008 11:42 PM

A Very Good Review By Rediff.. This is how Reviews should be. Compact, Simple. Covering the Basics of the Movie and not Dwelling on Past, Present, Future of Cinema and Diverting to topics out of context. Keep it up Ms Nithya Ramani. Three Stars for the Movie and Four Stars to the Reviewer...
