Although the first Harry Potter movie gave a glimpse of the magical world that JKRowling had in mind when she wrote the books, the subsequent movies could never quite capture the brilliance of the books.

The Godfather and LOTR are definitely among the brilliant adaptations.

What about the classics

Look at "Gone with the wind". The movie and the book are masterpieces in their own right. Margaret Mitchell wrote only one book, which was a labor of love and the work of a lifetime. David Selznick on the other hand used three directors to complete the film and finally gave the credit to Victor Fleming.

Lets not forget To kill a mocking bird. Harper Lee's portrayal of a beautiful southern childhood with all its contradictions is best captured on celluloid with the most loyalty.
