Have u ever watched movies like 'The lives of others' which won the oscar for best foreign movie last year? We keep yapping abt Chak de and OSO...try watching the movies that get nominated for the oscars...then u would know how crap our mainstream movies that are sent to the oscars are...there are so many better movies in other regional languages in india that would stand a better chance of at least getting nominated, only if the committee that selects ours unbiased and have some sense.

Bang on Lucas...your observations are very right. Our movies are high on melodrama, low on subtlety and finesse.Chak De, while a nice hindi movie is all there is to it. 90% of the world audience will probably not relate to it or even if they can there are other movies out there which are simply better made. Also, In India we have a trend of a blockbuster being nominated. What is India's most loved movie may not be India's finest.
Best Movie: No Country for Old Men Best Director: Coens (NCfOM) Best Actor: George Clooney (Michael Clayton) Best Supporting Actor: Javier Bardem (NCfOL) Best Screenplay: Sean Penn (Into the Wild) Best Actress: ??

Oscar is just giving a award to one of the best foreign movie and i don't understand why ppl in india are crazy or think it is great to get oscar award which is mainly for hollywood and best movie award is always given for a hollywood movies. We should first stop thinking that indian movie getting oscar as one of the foregin movie is great.we have the 2nd largest movie industry next to hollywood all over the world

For we Indians "Zodiac" was a gripping and intriguing movie but for the americans it was just another movie based on the Zodiac killer's true incidences of the 60's and 70's. Though it was undoubtedly one of the best movies based on the true story but that didn't change the bottomline that there already were around half a dozen movies made and seen on the topic which alot of us in this part of the world are ignorant of and that is why it has come as some sort of a surprise to us.
Moreover, in hollywood remake and overrepetition of a subject doesn't get much of a credit maybe that's why a good screenplay(prob adaptated), direction and acting by the lead protagonist(Jake)is nowhere been talked about.

Dude.. Jake was great in that movie. Zodiac was one of the nominees for Palme D'Or at Cannes. Dave Fincher had never had it with the academy in the past though. That could be the only reason why Zodiac isnt being talked about.

Hey Raghavan, why u are comparing National Award to Oscar. Oscar is nothing infron of our National Award, wake up you firangis. Even our Filmfare Award is better than that, but still peoples are thingking that Oscar is Heaven or blahblah.
As somebody rightly observed, if Fincher's 'Zodiac' had been released late last year, it would have been on everybody's list of oscar contenders. It is a fascinating, intricate film that might just sneak up on the race. A director's cut is expected soon. Maybe that would boost its chances.

Zodiac has only an outside chance of a SUpporting Actor nomination for Mark Ruffalo - nothing else. Other early releases which will lose out are My Blueberry Nights (Natalie Portman - Supp. Actress) & 3:10 to Yuma (Russel Crowe & Christian Bale)

My picks for the awards (and who the academy will most likely go for): Movie: No Country for Old Men (Atonement) Actor: Mortensen - Eastern Promises (Daniel Day Lewis - TWBB) Actress - Laura Linney-The Savages (Julie CHristie) Supp.Actor - Javier Bardem (same) Supp.Actress - Portman (Blanchett) Background Score - Atonement (same-the typewriter clacking used to build the tension is amazing!) Cinematography - Atonement (the 7min shot of Dunkirk evac. wins hands down!) Director - Coen Bros - No COuntry for Old Men (Schnabel - Diving Bell&the Butterfly) Animation - Ratatouille (same) Foreign Film - Lust, Caution (can't say - Kite Runner & 4Months 3 Weeks 2 Days also didnt get nominated!) Adapted Screenplay - Atonement (same)
