When will he win award
by on Feb 26, 2008 10:12 AM

When win he win award. How many times that you put his name on the ballot and he go home empty handed. What will it take for him to win.At least he won Golden Globe. He will always be a winner to me.I guess because he don't played that Hollywood grind. You get his fans all wound-up hope he get to win and he don't.I don't think I ever watch Oscar again if that is you played your games.

Sweeney Todd
by on Feb 26, 2008 09:46 AM

I think Sweeney Todd should have been nominated in all the major categories. Not a huge Tim Burton or Johnny Depp fan, I was floored by the movie. Went out and bought the soundtrack. Should also note - I don't like musicals! It was just something that wouldn't leave my mind. I kept hearing "I will have vengence" over and over. Great movie. Great performances. Helena Bonham Carter was magnificent. Also note, Depp not only acts the part with an accent, he sings with one too. Very bad of the Academy to overlook him yet again.

I think Johnny Depp should have won. This was his 3rd nomination and 3rd time he was snubbed. Just like Curse of the Black Pearl, Sweeney Todd will be watched and remembered for years. Johnny creates such memorable characters
This time next I doubt if anyone will even remember There will be Blood let alone who the lead character was.

Snubbed
by on Feb 26, 2008 02:01 AM  | Hide replies

Most won't agree probably, but I think Johnny Depp was snubbed again. I'm not saying that DDL didn't do a terrific job in There Will Be Blood, because he did, but I just felt that Johnny really extended himself beyond all expectations, taking on a musical.

He could've fell flat on his face but he sounded great. The emotion and the power was all there. But of course, because he goes against the Hollywood grind, he was forgotten again.

Guess, I'll just have to face the facts that the Johnny Depp's and Tim Burton's of this world will probably never be given the recognition that they deserve...if they do, it'll be long after they are gone.

I so agree with you. Just like in Pirates I think he has created such a memorable charactor that Sweeney will be remembered for years. Whereas There Will be Blood will be forgotten by next year and who will remember who the main character is?

Yet another vote for Johnny Depp and his ability do do an exquisite portrayal of the character he is acting at the time. Sweeney Todd was pure brillance and Johnny nailed the character and I too believe that it is because of who he is and how he just doesn't care about the Big Wigs but cares deeply about his craft that he has been cheated out of these "awards". True to Johnny he is already the big winner - Sweeney Todd will be remembered for a long, long time and of course that Johnny and Sweeney became one goes without saying. He lives the role. High five Johnny Depp you are the best and it is so obvious what was done on Oscar night.

No country was the best of the lot.
by Niranjan on Feb 26, 2008 01:23 AM

No country....was the best among the lot. Simply magnificent! I can't get the movie out of my mind and it's been over a week since I saw it! The ending is subject to lot of debate and that is one of the best things about the movie. Long live the Coen bros, may their tribe increase!

Missing Good Movies
by Anup on Feb 25, 2008 07:06 PM

I live in London and one of the best things about living here is probably access to European films. So many little gems are released every year which wouldnt even get a mention or a box office release in India. Being an avid movie fanatic, I feel like a boy in a candy store relishing a wide assortment of European and East Asian movies. I hope some day soon, world cinema would have a market in India. But then we would have to keep an open mind to understand and assimilate a different culture and a different point of view than the usual melange of dance and drama or 'leave your brains at home' movies.

Oscar Winners - 2008
by Mehernosh Bharucha on Feb 25, 2008 04:01 PM  | Hide replies

Oscars, 2008 - the shortest ceremony in yrs, clocking in at a healthy 3 & a qrtr hrs - was the Best in Years, honoring absolutely the Best Talent of the year. And Three Cheers to Jon Stewart - i need need need him to rtn as Host next yr and also snag an Emmy in Sept this yr. What a grand gesture he made in recalling first time winner Marketa Irglova to the stage to have her say!

The magnificent Daniel Day-Lewis - what an acceptance speech and how finely lauded by his winning cinematographer Robert Elswit. & how awesome was Marion Cotillard as Edith Piaf ?

Could the Coen Bros have been any more self-effacing in each of their three triumphs ? & it was just exhilarating to see Frances McDormand lustily cheering them on every time they trooped on stage.

so, when is THERE WILL BE BLOOD hitting cinemas in Bbay ? Anybody gonna release the sparkling JUNO or LA VIE EN ROSE ?

I continue to be disappointed that :

1) BLACK FRI was NOT India's entry for competition in the Foreign Lang Films category ;

2) James MacAvoy was overlooked for ATONEMENT as was Emile Hirsch for INTO THE WILD ; and that

3) Paul Dano was overlooked for his firespewing evangelist Eli Sunday alongside Daniel D-L, in complete contrast to his work last year in LI'L MS SUNSHINE. It is no consolation that neither was Steve Carell last yr for playing the suicidal scholar FRANK in LMS.

Our Indian films never make it to the Oscars as:
1) wrong films are sent
2) not enough campaigning is done for selection
