maybe our reviewers should stop thinking about whether a hollywood movie or role can win an oscar or not. They should just stick to what indians bother about, that is reveiwing the movie for indians. Who cares who wins the oscar. It is their awards for their films.

The Dark Knight
by Anup on Aug 18, 2008 01:30 PM

I just saw The Dark Knight on IMAX and its just awesome as quite a few scenes in the movie were shot using special IMAX camera and the cinemas here in London are booked a month in advance, its so bad now they have a midnight show.I totally agree with Mr.Sen,as Dark Knight somehow lacks the heart and charm of Spidey and took itself way too seriously just to satisfy the hardcore BAT fans who pride themselves for being loyal fans to this 'dark' and 'brooding' hero of the Gotham city. Its probably the best superhero movie of the year, but I am not willing to call it anything more than that

IMDB compromised by zealots
by Nirmal Kumar on Aug 18, 2008 12:31 PM

My sentiments exactly. Especially the IMDB ratings. they're getting screwier with every passing month. People give 10s so arbitrarily. The prime example is that incredibly shoddy movie, Iron Man having an 8.2 on IMDB. Pleaseee!!! A rating greater than 8 used to be a benchmark for a "must see". It no longer is. IMDB should introduce a "cooling off" period for ratings to take effect.

Dark Knight is a great movie!!!
by Guest on Aug 18, 2008 12:04 PM

i disagree with all this. Super hero movie are not just for kids or just for entertainment. They are supposed to make us realise that how wer have been doing lately. But we need to open our eyes. People do not like to see the bad in them. Its not pitty on Ledger that people are viewing this movie. I didn't know he was dead wen I watched the movie. it is by far the best Super Hero movie I have seen. May be you all have not seen the batman animated series. Else you would have known that it is the truest Batman movie. You need to understand who Batman is first. then you would definitely like the movie.
And in the theatre where I watched the movei, all the kids were ejoying it a lot. They were clapping when Joker loses and showing such signs that they liked it.

Mr. Sen, what drives you? What you feel or who you want people to feel about you? This new piece clearly tells me you'll do anything to sound different. The Godfather came out decades ago. To an entire generation of movie watchers, it has been the defining crime caper of their lives. But the Dark Knight is this generation's special flick. It'a crime saga, a comment on the spectre of terror looming around us, a comic hero flick and most importantly, a darn good movie. Warner Brothers have long since turned down the volumes on their media amps. The Dark Knight now lives in our collective psyche. The hype, as you wrongly call it, is only millions echoing how great the film is to them personally. So just for once, stop trying so hard to be different. Stop contradicting yourself just because you owe it to your media-constructed identity. Join us Dark Knight fans and tell everyone that you really do love the the Dark Knight.

Excellent Review!!
by Raj Royale on Aug 18, 2008 11:36 AM  | Hide replies

This is one excellent review of superhero movies in a way I never thought they could be compared.
Jack Nicholson's performance in the 1st Bat movie seems to have influenced him for life. In most roles from then on, he s been quoting quotable oneliners while maniacally smiling all the while. OR maybe Jack is the one who should be credited with affecting Joker's mannerisms. He sure set the standard. Having said that Heath Ledger seems to be the better actor of the two. Because he needed to 'act' the role and that requires effort to become someone you are not. (His suicide because of a divorce points to a persona of a sensitive person. Very un-Joker like. Or un-Jack Nicholson like, who went through such mundane things as divorce in his life stoically, without changing)

Congratulations, RajRoyale! You have provided more bullshit in your few lines than an entire cow farm suffering from dysentry. This must be a record.

You have proved you have no idea about Jack Nicholson's career graph. He had already patented the maniacal mannerisms in "One flew over the cuckoo's nest" and "The Shining". There was nothing he did as Joker that he had not done before. He was already hamming by the time he did "The Shining" and he took it a few notches higher in Batman (Disclaimer: I am a fan of King Jack).

Have you seen Nicholson's performance in "Five Easy Pieces" or "Chinatown"? Have you even heard of it?

And don't bother comparing Ledger and Jack. You are not worthy.

dark knight hit to honour late heath ledger

The death of Heath Ledger, the joker villain of Dark Knight, is a mystery, and American have pity on him and made the movie hit. Otherwise it is just average movie which did not do in other countries.

The movie is very good and the performance of Heath Ledger was excellent. The movie would have been a hit with or without his death. However, the runaway success of the movie could be attributed to his untimely death.

Seriously ... you're joking right? Because if you're serious, then you need to have been given the role of the Joker.

Heath Ledger, actually lived the role of the joker, in the truest sense. He go addicted to drugs because he kept getting nightmares of the devilish character that he played in The Dark Knight.

And one such fatal overdose killed him. Its no mystery, that's the truth.

And if you have the audacity to claim that the Americans had pity on him and "made" the movie a Hit, you seriously don't understand what a good film is.

The Dark Knight is not just a hit in the US, its a worldwide hit. Theatres have been sold out even now in many parts of the world.

And its not to pay tribute to Heath Ledger, but because the movie is just that damn good.

Sorry to burst the bubble of tdk being a "worldwide hit". Fact is, tdk is doing roaring business in US and has not lived up to expectations around the world (compare the domestic and foreign BO numbers.. even Indy 4 trumps it). Some may say that tdk is yet to open in germany and france (?) but including those markets, tdk is not minting money in foreign BO. It was dethroned easily by Mummy 3, japan numbers are disappointing, UK performance was average. The hype machine around ledger's death is unbelievable (if you don't believe it..check out imdb forums...fanboys want the movie to be a hit as an "honor" to ledger!!).

I am not dissing tdk.. just saying that an average movie, at best, has been blown out of proportion. TDK is good but it isn't great.
Oh....if you check out imdb forums, you will see that many fanboy fanatics wished Morgan Freeman be dead..just cause it will keep tdk afloat.
TDK has seen the worst of fanboy behaviour (invading every other movie's forums and trolling there).
