Shooted all his movies only in India
by suresh kumar on May 01, 2008 11:23 AM  | Hide replies

The great thing about Mani apart from his many technical aspects, he shooted all his movies in India(except Kannathil Mutha..-script demanded it) only. It was a motivation for others to show our country in a beautiful way.

But the way mani shot "item song" in guru ws like any othr director shooting "item songs" b.c it will bring in the crowds.

All his other "item songs" somehow blend in the movie and most imp. thing, it doesn't slow the movie, nor is it being seen as scene tht cud be cut out.

But in guru, tht ws totally unneccesary since it's nothing diff. from other "item songs" in hindi movies.

Mani is unmatchable
by Seeni Mohamed on May 01, 2008 11:20 AM

Mani - You yourself, are an institute of film, in your own right.

I dont know if there will be another film like nayakan in my lifetime with the same level of drama, substance and entertainment.

Even with the present day shankars, cherans and ameers your feats are unmatchable.

Saju I don't blame you, just give it a chance. You will see wonders in him film, belive me. I was a stereo typed movie goes who used to watch masala movies, but when I first saw Nayagan, I thought it was crap. But then when I grew and got fed up with all the masala movies, I saw Nayagan again...and again...and again...gosh, its such a diamond. I felt so cheap that I couldnt get the nitty gritties of this beautiful movie. Then it followed, one after another...Agni Nakshitiram, Dalapathi, Anjali, Geetanjali, Roja, Kannathil Muttamittal...awesome. All I am asking is just give it another chance.

Who is Shankar ohhh that director same story in 4 Films (Indian,Muthalvan,Anniyan,Gentleman)? He does not know any other story? Exception is Boys but it is mixture of Vikaraman's films. May be producers pushing him to do same type of films. I thing producer Shankar is 100 times better than director Shankar. Sorry if i m very harsh.

Think about it ! if someone could present a same story in 4 films and make them a super hit (not based on actors), it is a commendable skill. Wouldn't you agree ?

Mate, you missed out sivaji !

Producer shankar gives what director shankar wants.

Thers nothing to missed out in sivaji.
Indian, muthalvan, anniyan ws good since it did have some story. But strong performnces of actors in these movies made us ignore the fact tht there's nothin in the story.

But,one suggestion to shankar. Too many songs, it's such a drawback and slows down the movie and excitement. I like shankar's movie since it's exciting and you can't wait for wht will come next, but the songs completely ruins tht feeling b.c it distracts us. Also he never has any use of heriones, wonder why?
The only excpetion ws Jeans, w/miss world and thts why it ws popular, otherwise who goes in for prashanth.

Otherwise, shankar is a good filmmaker.

Greatest Director of all Times
by vishnu vijayan on May 01, 2008 10:28 AM

madirectors is one of the best directors India has ever produced. In fact we all ahosul be pround that we are living in an era with this truely great genius. I feel very sad when some scrap masala movies make it to the top and movies like Yuva & Guru get ordinary response from the box office.
Mani, one of my sincere advice is to try and change your actors frequently. You were stiuck with madhavan for quite some time and now it is Abishek. Why dont you give more break to actors like Surya & Vikram?
Keep up the good work Mani, and may God bless you with good health to make many more wonderful movies.

I totally agree, even though I am not a malayali, I was forced to watch a malayalam movie by one of my mallu friends...gosh...they are superb. May be becaz of the budget they dont have the lavishness, but their screenplay, direction, script, cinemotography is something which I think bollywood will take another 50 years to catch up with.

No sarva da!!!

He is talking abt directors, not actors.

Have u evr heard of adoor gopalakrishnan, shaji kuran, k.s sethumadhavan, g.aravindan, john abraham, murali nair.

Adoor, shaji kuran, murali nair hav all won cannes award for their films multiple times. They have all won international festival awards for their films. Adoor gopalakrishan is said to be the true heir to satyajit ray, by international directors at cannes.

Also, kamal hassan's interview after hey ram said tht there is no one in tamil cinema thts like adoor gopalakrishnan.

No cinema needs special effect, action heroes, lavish sets etc.. to win awards internationally. Those things can be won only at techinical category, not evn for best film.
Do you see a spider man, x-men, matrix, lord of the rings(1&2) winning oscars for best film. NO, only exclent stories, characters, directors wins international awards for really good movies.

Any cinema can get special effects and all tht stuff for their movies, providing thy have the money.

But only few can have a really fantastic story and characters i.e satyajit ray, mrinal sen, ritwik ghatak, adoor gopalakrhisnan, shaji kuran, g.aravindan.

its appalling that none of these north Indian journalist idiots including rediff arent aware of your gems you gave in the 80's for Tamil Cinema...Who can forget Pallavi Anu Pallavai (Priya O'Priya), Mouna Raagam and Agni Natchatram and Anjali. Priya O' Priya carried the best musical composition ever unparalled by none but sadly it was light years ahead of its time.

Better educate these idiots about your great works atleast in interviews

Thanks

Yes Maniratnam is the best Indian movie director so far.
His movies are a class apart and very much Indian culture and has always a good message for the masses.
We need more movies from him atleast one or two a year by this you are doing a big favour to the whole country through the movie media. Please pass on your exceptional skills to someone younger as well so we are not starved of the magical movies in future, some of that you had done in the past.

trouble shooter: A bit wrong in your presumptions mate...Satyajit Ray and Mrinal sen were primarily bengali directors..Bengali, Malayalam and Tamil were the front runners of quality cinema although some like K.Vishwanath in Telugu provided some class movies.

Cannot understand how you can club Satyajit Ray and Mrinal Sen in the bollywood bandwagon...

Finally the first South Indian director to make it big in North was Sridhar..Dil Ek Mandir and many block busters even Raj Kapoor had to wait for his call sheets...

The we had KB (Ek Tu Je Keliye) and many more...

Thanks

As for this North Indian Bigotory media and fans alike concerned Manirathnam is all about his 90's movies- that were dubbed in Hindi or the movies they were aware.

That guy was already a great director before he started making Hindi movies.

what has northies or southies got anything to do it dear friend? Mani rathnam is probably one of the very few filmmakers from the south to have actually made a dent in the indian film industry. Am sure u wud never have heard of satyajit ray or hritwik ghatak or mrinal sen or hrishikesh mukherjee ever in ur life u madrasi!
