Marathi film industry should prosper
by on Apr 18, 2008 02:02 PM  | Hide replies

Bollywood itself - the Hollywood of erstwhile Bombay - has no traces of the Marathi language left in it. The word Bollywood which should ideally denote the Marathi film industry is famous world over as the Hindi film industry. Hindi imposition seems to have worked such magic on the Marathi people that they seem to have given up hope of elevating their mother tongue to be the entertainment language of choice.

Due to all this, the Marathis see that their language has been thrown into the dustbin. They see that their own people are not getting jobs in Mumbai. They see that the interests of their own people are neglected. While Mumbai is no doubt providing employment to millions of people, they are forced to ask -- "what's in it for us, the hosts?". The answer manifests itself as an undisclosed pain in the hearts of millions of Marathis.

Obviously, this can't go on for ever. No people desirous of furthering their tribe can afford to yield to the rhetoric that they, and they alone need to be altruistic in an environment of reckless predators, however much the rhetoric be sugarcoated and temporarily fooling.

Thankfully there are some good movies coming at last !

I think the SON of SOIL theory hit Marathi Manoos most than anything after formation of Maharshtra. This theory is impractical. Who should be give a Naukari is decided on the what benefit will business get, it will be never based on who is son of soil.
For example smita Thackeray, Binda Thackeray produced many movies but since they were doing business they kept away the son of soil theory while selecting musician, actor, script writer etc. Better these leader should ask Marathi Manoos to develop competitive edge rather than depending on son of soil theory.

surprising
by ashish shekhar on Apr 18, 2008 12:15 PM  | Hide replies

Its surprising that despite being heart of indian cinema in mumbai, we dont have either good marathi movies or marathi stars. Perhaps most marathi producers prefer making hindi cinema and most marathi actors try their hand in marathi movies only after failing in hindi movies.

there are only one or two marathi producers like ashutosh gowarikar, sudhakr bokade. As per my knowledge most of marathis cinemas are produced by non-marthis.
Raj is asking proof of loyality from AB when he opens school in UP. why he is not asking same thing to marathi producers/actors to produce movie in marathi and promote marathi? Are marathi producers/actor are exmpted from marathi swabhiman/sankruti drive which is run by Raj/MNS?

yes sameer. Most of the marathi manoos treat thackray family as a hero but they dont see when someone from thier family produces movie its in hindi. they(Thackrays) prefer to party and make friendship with hindi movie star rather than marathi.
Marathi movie is being killed by these kind of leaders only. I remeber there was an era of Dada Konake, Ramesh Dev, Nilu Phoole but those are lost glory. Even non-marathi's used to like to lsiten marathi songs.
Raj tackray is indirectly communicating to Marathi Manoos that is AB would have not come to mumbai to act in movie someone from you (marathi actros) would have become superstar. He is applying same logic to other fields also which far away from truth.

Very True, Marathi cinema has no heroes. But Marathi cinema has some of the finest actors Indian cinema has ever witnessed (Arun Sarnaik, Dr. Shriram Lagoo, Dilip Prabhavalkar, Nilu Phule, Mohan Joshi to name a few). Who needs heroes when we have such actors???

Mani, Whatever has been said is said in the context of Marathi movie making. I am not getting regional here. I agree that the above mentioned actors have worked in various languages, but these are the very actors who have given Marathi movies their identity. All I wanted to say was when we have actors of such caliber, why do we need an SRK? It's more of serious acting and powerful performances than getting stars on screen.
Yes, u need a star if u wanna make money, but u need good actors, scripts, direction to make good movies. Hence, when someone says that we dont have an SRK, he/ she is just not respecting the calibre of such talented actors.

For non-marathi people who wish to watch Marathi movies, I recommend the following movies Pinjra, Saamna, Sinhasan, Vazir, Raatra Aarambh, VastuPurush, Devrai.

dear please start accepting fact and accordingly on the same.
all are saying marathi cinema has better story, better acttors then why marathi cinema is suffering? why thier collection is so poor? I saw Valu people say its a hit movie but in the theater hardly 70-100 viewers were there.

Tanmay,
There's a difference between a popular movie and a good movie. All good movies may not be popular (hit) and vice versa. Marathi movies are good, but they dont have huge budgets. So Marketing suffers and hence the collections. You will also find popular "masala" marathi comedies (strange enough, but most of the hit, masala Marathi movies tend to be comedies).

Good days for Marathi movies
by Appa B on Apr 17, 2008 11:24 PM  | Hide replies

Marathi movies really started getting more substance oriented from the movie shwas which was India's entry to the Oscars.Even before that, there were some path breaking films like the first all women movie "Bindhast" and political dramas like Sarkarnama, but the target audience was concentrated in the B and C cities like Nashik, Nagpur, Pune and rural Maharastra. But its heartening to see that the Multpiplexes are opening to Marathi films and more and more people are turning up to see these films. With the movies getting more slicker and with better marketing and advertising strategies I am sure Marathi cinema will regain its golden days.
Wishing the entire Marathi fraternity All the Best..

Jai Hind, Jai Maharashtra..

I must admit that,Recent Marathi movies are very refreshing .. they may be comedies..or serious drama.. whatever.. I always like to watch them.. even though i live in Delhi..
th e movies like.. Pak pak pakak, or kedar shinde comedy films , or that nina kulkarni film 'shevri' were very good..
And ofcourse the classical Jabbar patel films SAAMNA , Sinhasan, or the PINJARA are among the best cinema that India might have produced..
There is a sence of Originality in Marathi cinema which I like....
Also the Marathi Directors are Uniquely Talented.. I like their work.. eg. Ashutosh Govarikar or Jabbar patel , or the Gr8 V Shantaram.. and also recent Madhur Bhandarkar.
hope to see VALU soon...
Long live Marathi cinema.
