Raja Sen
by S N on Apr 15, 2008 06:41 PM  | Hide replies

I have been reading Raja Sen's reviews...To me he looks like very knowledgable..Any movie he reviews he can easily relate or tell from which hollywood or sometime french flick from where it is copied or inspired..
His english and narration also makes the reading interesting but sometime boring coz of the length.. He gets carried away while playing with words and exactly doesnt tell whether the film is bad / good, coz those views are left to the individual to judge.. I many times doesnt agree with his ratings though.. e.g Sarkar he gave less rating but the movie was excellent.. For Nishabd/Eklaya he gave good ratings, and I agreed with his ratings even though the films were flop.. I think he gave high rating to OSO which I didnt agree ..these r few I can recollect..but by and large he comes out with points which probably other reviewer cannot visualise.. Other reviewers simply either trach or prise the movie/actor etc.. but Raja does some investigation as from where it is inspired, how it is narrated etc.. which I belive r qualities only few can possess.. in fact all Oscar nominated movies are reviewed by him and I guess no other reviewer wud have made justice to reviwing those movies..A reviewer has too see something beyond normal man just like Photographer can see something in a photograph which he/she cliks which a normal individual can not..that sets the class from mass apart..
So Raja, if u r reading this...it is good going Keep it up..

Pavan Prasad & SN,

For long I thought I was the only one who earnestly read Raja Sen's reviews.
There's so much RajaSen-bashing going on here.
So much that it's now become quite fashionable, I guess.
If you don't understand him, you are licensed to abuse him & tear him to pieces ... that
seems to be the credo.

Yes, there are times at which I couldn't agree with him, but we can't bash him up. Should we ?
However much we keep adding to our understanding of this art form, we do have something called 'individual taste'. So, each to his own.
I agreed with his JodhaaAkbar review, but disagreed with his criticism of TZP's climax.
Overall, there's no doubting his knowledge of the medium, as you mentioned.

After seeing so much of 'Sen'sational abuse here over the last so many months, felt like raising my hat too.

3 Cheers.
Mr.Sen, to repeat what others like Pavan & SN have already said here... keep going.

Have a dictionary nearby.
And if that doesn't help, a grammar book explaining simple/compound/complex sentences, with special reference to "a refresher on clauses".

Point is well driven -
1)Be original or rather, atleast try to be.
2)Inspiration is acceptable; Plagiarism not.
3)If you make a remake, give due credit to the concerned. You owe it!

I agree with Amit.
It is not about "if you dont like then dont read".
There are lot of things you do everythig, but not necessary that you should like them
Rediff has been seen as a one stop point for all information you want. So people expect the movie reviews also of the good quality.
If you read all Raja Sen's reviews all looks same, with by default rating of not watchable and all SRK movies with by default 3-4 start rating. He never cares about the music of the film, he has no idea what is the meaning of editing, script, screen play. You will never find Raja Sen saying the film has a good/bad screen play or background score. We expect a person who is writing for Rediff to be very sound in what he is writing about. But here Raja Sen is nothing but just a guy who has grown up watching SRK portraying Raj or Rahul. Now who on earth will say OSO was a good movie. A hit movie is not necessarily be called as a good movie.

@Mehta,
One more proof to prove that Mehta is a real Dumbo. Raja Sen gives good rating only to SRK movies which is said and as far as my knowledge goes DON also stars SRK in it. I think someone really fooled Mehta and showed him some other movie on the name of DON. Run Mehta get your money back.

Just one review out of 100 reviews is correct. And you call him the good reviewer. Needless to say who is Dumbo over here. Anyway why am I writing this. The name Mehta says it all.
