Yes indeed, it was a technical spectacle. Good locales, great costumes, some good sequences, above average music by A.R.Rahman, but thats about it.
Not an outstanding movie by any standards. In fact, a giant come-down in standards after Anniyan for Shankar.
But then what makes it a monster hit or as some claim, the biggest hit of Indian cinema?
The sole claim for this particular achievement goes to none other than the special breed called Rajini fans plus (I strongly suspect) some appreciators and admirers of technically-excellent cinema made in Tamil. Those people have come out in significant numbers to propel it to the position it has achieved till now.

Please do not commit the same mistake other critics of Sivaji or Rajini are making. They too criticise the fans of Rajini, or his movies or even worse generalized Tamilians or South Indians as being uniformly stupid etc. Ok, oppose anyone criticising blindly or without any foundation or basis. Saying or expressing all north indians to be stupid is quite unacceptable. I hope you rectify yourself. Beware, your message could be complained against for abusive or libellous language.

I have read this comment and subsequent comments of yours on this topic. Well I have already said that the language used by Lion King is unacceptable and he too has apologized. At the same time, without trying to justify his reaction, there are others who are pretending to be critics who are commenting merely for the sake of blindly criticising and ridiculing both Rajinikant, his fans plus south indians in general, Tamilians in particular. Even that is unfair and it was said that there was no one who asked them not to do so. Given the constant haranguing by people like Sameer and Karthik, who cannot refer to Rajini by name rather they call him Taklu, monkey, donkey etc. these people have nothing to offer a single comment on the movie or the acting skills of Rajini. Obviously such people know nothing about Tamil or Rajini movies or his acting. Well there are few people with a very short fuse here too, who react to blind criticism in a manner that is obviously quite abusive, but that is more out of provocation than to resort to any unprovoked criticism of others. Of course, there language is unacceptable and improper, but if only the agent provocateurs would bend their tail? Alas that did not seem to happen.

It was indeed reprehensible of you to use such terriby abusive language in this forum. Pls. remember it spoils the fair name of Rajinikanth and his fans. Fine, if you are enthusiastic about Rajini, keep praising him sky high, but why lower your level to such abysmal levels. You must apologise to everyone for such behaviour and utterances. If you are a truly good and real fan of Rajini's I am sure you will follow suit. There will be praise andt here is bound to be criticism of anyone or anything.. why should you bother if you liked it. Why should you bother about criticism? If you do also, you can reply in honorable language. Why resort to abuses?

Thanks for the broad mindedness Narsimhan. I really appreciate. As far as my friend Lion King goes...Dude...I am speechless.. What is it with bathing and North Indians ? You sound Rural. Get a life.
Others at the Forum : Anything that is made public especially Art will always stand the test of criticism. Now its personally my choice to like it or despise it. Therz also something in between called humor. The humor conveys that i 'DON't HATE' things but i find them funny. Now they could be the culture, jokes or simply the storyline. What i am not able to understand is the element that gets you so ignited abt this thing. Please understand, Rajnikant is as much as a part of India as you and I are. If you are conveying anything else, then you are simply not worth being an Indian. Be an Indian first and then a regional man. I spent 3 years in Chennai and let me tell you, I have some of the best friends ever there... Please do not disgrace them.

I am amazed mr.first last may because I noticed a north indian saying be Indian first and then regional....dont know to laugh or cry. I SOund Rural?? what you live in some train station or airport to be Urban get some paise buddy. unfortunately I didnt see the hopitality that you enjoyed for 3 years in chennai in the northen cities. so rude, narrow minded frogs in the well. well thats my experience. but u still cant deny not brushing your teeth and not taking bath everyday. be it rural or urban. The trains from North you got to take a look or smell it from a kilometer. sorry its the fact but u can work on it buddy.

As far as not taking bath is concerned, i dunno where you picked it up from. I will be delighted to propose your name for cleaning the trains to Mr. Laloo Yadav. You seem to have a penchant for picking up negative vibes. I choose to stay away from this discussion. You may behave the way u want. So, my friend, please continue being what you are and serve as an example of what not to be.
this boooollywood and the other southern movie industry are the laughing stock of the entire world.
movies never made any country great, the just make the actors & directors rich.
america is No.1 due to the scientists (270 nobel prizes), enterpeneurs (300 largest companies) & sportsmen (2400 olympic medals), not due to hollywood.
take a look at china, they are emphasizing education, economy & sports.....not churning out zillions of 3rd rated movies yearly.

errrr....with so many movies made, why is not a single movie camera, sound editing, special fx, lighting or other equipment produced ? only the americans, japanese & germans seem to be able to make the movie hardware, which is the real difficult job....acting in films is so easy, any moron can do it.

Cycube... Making hardware is a mundane boring job. We Indians are more talented and smarter than to waste time on these. Therefore, we outsource these to the countries you mentioned and spend more time and effort in the artistic side of film making...
People here who run their mouth cursing Rajini, making fun of him and even talking about Video Game "Street Fighter II"...ohh Guys GROW UP.. Stop feeling jealous...and u guys think u can do better than Rajini in acting and givin much better style than him..hahahah... and dont get excited by watching English movie like Matrix or anyother science fiction movie, where people fly, perform some action against principle of Science..but the fact is people think this is intelligent movie and when they see the same action in indian movies but not COMPLETELY SAME, though kind similar action, but people think this is rubbish movie.. thought i cant compare Hollywood and Kollywood but still... but i think u got my point...and by the way dont compare Big B or Small B with Rajini.. though both are good actor they have created a space for them self rather than fighting for a space in indian cinema , but still rajini has a great fans all over the world.. he have 63000 fan's club all over the world.. But here who Rubbish about rajini all it shows that these guys dont have a Guts to accept the Fact Rajini Really Rocks... though he is old he still looks and made young in the movies which is really NOT POSSIBLE with any actors in Bollywood...as a indian be happy to have a ACTOR like Rajini who is just famous and provides a Good Entertainment...

So, next thing you know is that a collection of 63000 people called Rajni Bhaktas will demand an OBC and reservations statuts... Man, i love this country.
Believe it or not.Rajnikanth is the winner.so many people tried to act stylish.Nothing worked.His movie is a hit in southindia,metro cities,US, and in japan.One cannot continue to remain on top for 25 years if he is not having something to deliver.He is something special!
Mohanlal was supposed to do the villain role in Sivaji,but it did not happen for obvious reasons.Rajini was terrified that Mohanlal would steal the thunder from him.
